{"id":8510,"date":"2016-08-23T11:02:26","date_gmt":"2016-08-23T15:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/business\/?p=8510"},"modified":"2016-08-23T11:02:26","modified_gmt":"2016-08-23T15:02:26","slug":"from-dugout-to-boardroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/business\/blog\/2016\/08\/23\/from-dugout-to-boardroom\/","title":{"rendered":"From Dugout to Boardroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Running a business and managing a sports team take the same leadership qualities, UMaine head baseball coach Steve Trimper told students in MBS lecturer Clint Relyea\u2019s organizational behavior class last fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA successful CEO can coach a sports team, and a successful coach can run a business,\u201d Trimper said in his presentation \u201cDrive for Greatness: Building Leadership for your Team or Organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keeping the class enthralled with his enthusiastic, easygoing manner and personal experiences, Trimper discussed techniques that can help students develop their leadership skills and begin the path to professional and personal success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got us interested and motivated right off the bat,\u201d says Porter Rooney \u201916, a management major.<\/p>\n<p>Among Trimper\u2019s leadership advice: surround yourself with good people; have a positive attitude; don\u2019t let failure stop you; aim to improve your performance daily; be prepared to tell people what they don\u2019t want to hear; provide direction while sharing control; and don\u2019t worry about what people think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a leader, think big \u2014 small minds can\u2019t understand big dreams,\u201d he told students. \u201cGreat thinkers are always thought to be a little crazy. They were going to execute (Isaac) Newton, they almost locked (Christopher) Columbus in a stockade and they fired Steve Jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After becoming interested in motivational and leadership practices six years ago, Trimper, who has a master\u2019s degree in educational leadership, interviewed and shadowed CEOs from Fortune 100 companies and researched articles on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in addition to training the Black Bears baseball team, he travels to businesses across the country to offer leadership tools and techniques that combine the managerial skills of high-powered executives with lessons he has learned from being a coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very clear that he was passionate about what he was doing,\u201d says Morgan Cushing \u201917, who is a double major in management and marketing. \u201cEverything he said connected to us in some way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He advised students to: think of failure as a gift that presents great opportunities for growth and tests your determination, commitment and courage; involve and empower everyone on your team by sharing control; and focus on short-term goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach week, try to be 5 percent better than you were before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Lopes \u201917, a management major, says Trimper\u2019s advice about working on improving yourself and your organization a little every day resonated with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that if you do that consistently, the long-term goals will naturally follow,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Surround yourself with good people and good things will happen, Trimper told the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people around us have a huge influence on our success and failure. Find people with positive energy and build off those individuals,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n<p>As a leader, \u201cyou have to fake it til you make it,\u201d he said. \u201cI know how hard it is to bolster a team\u2019s spirits after a losing game. But, as a coach, I have to go in there with an \u2018everything\u2019s gonna be great\u2019 attitude. Your optimism today leads to your success tomorrow.
