John F. Mahon is the John M. Murphy Chair of International Business Policy and Strategy and Professor of Management at the Maine Business School, University of Maine. He was the founding director of the School of Policy and International Affairs at UM. From 2004 to 2006, he served as Provost ad interim; from 2007 – 2010 he was Dean, College of Business Public Policy and Health. Prior to his ap-pointment at Maine, Professor Mahon was a Professor of strategy and policy and chair of the Strategy and Policy Department at the School of Management at Boston University. He received his D.B.A. from Boston University, his M.B.A. (with honors) from Bryant College, and his B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author or co-author of over 140 papers and book chapters published in such journals as the Academy of Business Disciplines Journal, Academy of Management Review, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Business in the Contemporary World, Business&Society, Business Horizons, California Management Review, Case Research Journal, Corporate Public Affairs, Corporate Reputation Review, Global Business and Economics Review, International Journal of Value Based Management, Industrial Crisis Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary Business, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Surgical Research, Global Business and Economics Review, Global Focus, Long Range Planning, Management Science, Medical Care Review, International Journal of Public Affairs, Public Affairs Review, Strategic Management Journal and the Strategic Planning Review. His work has appeared in the following books: The Accountable Corporation, Handbook of Business Strategy, Research in Corporate Social Performance and Policy, The Portable MBA in Strategy, Perspectives on Corporate Social Responsibility, Cultural Strategies of Agenda Denial: Avoidance, Attack, and Redefinition, The Strategic Planning Management Reader and The Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and Society. He is also the co-author of an introductory text in management, and the author or co-author of over 90 cases in strategy, general management, and public policy/public affairs. Professor Mahon’s research and teaching interests focus on four specific areas: (1) how organizations shape/influence public policy and combat interest groups; (2) how organizations use reputation for profit and to blunt public policy/interest group initiatives; (3) how organizations plan and execute strategies; and (4) how organizations anticipate/respond to organizational crises. Professor Mahon has won 12 national awards for his research and writing during the period 2008 – 2010. In June of 2009 his co-authored article “Corporate Social Performance and Corporate Financial Performance: Twenty-Five Years of Incomparable Research,” was recognized as the most cited paper in the 50 year history of the peer reviewed journal Business&Society.
Mahon received the Issue Management Council’s first-ever award given to an academic for the impact his research /executive education has had on the discipline and practice of issues management. He and his colleagues won an “Outstand-ing Achievement in Leadership Preparation by Colleges and Universities” award from the American Association of School Administrators for the Boston Leadership Academy – a program for principals of public schools at all levels in the city of Boston. It was one of only two awards given nationally. Professor Mahon was one of only 3 faculty worldwide elected to the inaugural “Fellows” status of the International Association for Business and Society. Professor Mahon was also elected an honorary member of the Francis Crowe Engineering Society by the University of Maine’s College of Engineering.
Professor Mahon has also won numerous awards for his teaching excellence at the local and national level. He was the first co-recipient of the General Electric Corporation Award for leadership in management curriculum reform and was recog-nized by Prentice-Hall for teaching excellence at the National Meetings of the Academy of Management in San Francisco.
Professor Mahon has taught in a variety of executive education programs in university settings, and has served as an executive educator and/or consultant for a variety of Fortune 500 firms, including, but not limited to, All China Federation of Industry and Commerce (Beijing, China), BellSouth Corporation, BHP (Australia), Cardinal Health, Ciba-Geigy, Daewoo (Korea), Digital Equipment Corp., Honeywell International, Jones and Laughlin Steel, Motorola Corporation, New England Telephone, NYNEX, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals (Japan), Pillsbury Corporation, Sanyo Corporation (Japan), Southwestern Bell, Telstra (Australia), and the Travelers. In the same capacity, he has served organizations in the public sector; trade associa-tions; and government agencies at the local, state and federal level.
Professor Mahon also chaired the Social Issues in Management Division of the National Academy of Management and was president (and co-founder) of the International Association for Business and Society. He was the Editor of Business and Society (2004 – 2007) and serves on the editorial boards of Alliance, Case Research Journal, and the International Journal of Public Affairs. He is noted in Lexington’s Who’s Who Executive and Professional Registry; Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (multiple times); Who’s Who in America; International Who’s Who of Professionals; Who’s Who in the World; Who’s Who in Business and Finance and Who’s Who in American Education.
He resides in Hampden, Maine with his wife, Julie, Tim the wonder beagle, and Audrey, the inscrutable cat.
