Social media guidelines
The following social media brand guidelines were established for university-wide use. Following these guidelines will ensure you’re representing the university on third-party social media platforms appropriately. Social Network Branding Guidelines are available to view through UMaine’s Social Network Directory.
UMaine also features a social network directory that lists branded and approved social network accounts. To add a department, organization, or program to the directory, visit the Social Network Directory page, follow the branding guidelines and use the form to submit the social network account.
Primary UMaine social media avatar
The primary UMaine social media accounts use the following avatar to distinguish itself from the other colleges and departments. This avatar is not to be used by any UMaine college or department.
Department or college social media avatars
The dark blue background with Maine Crest avatar is reserved for the university’s main social accounts. For other departments or colleges you have two options:
- The Maine Crest against a white background. Keep in mind that any other college or department using this avatar will appear similar as there is no unique identifier for your college or department.
- The Maine crest against a white background with a divider line and the department or college name below. This is considered the best avatar option.

Cover photo banner images
Cover photo banner images for social media should be simple and not contain text. The Department of Marketing and Communications maintains a photo database of UMaine images that can be used on social media. To view the database, call 207.581.3743.
