It is intended to support travel that will benefit the education, research and career development of MS and PhD students. Awards of up to $500 will be given for the 2014-2015 academic year. Award criteria include 1) abstract quality (writing and quality of science), 2) seniority, 3) grade-point average and 4) previous receipt of the award.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Submission <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Applications must be submitted by e-mail by <strong>4:00 p.m. <\/strong>on <strong>March 30, 2015<\/strong>. Reimbursement applications for expenses incurred during the 2014 fall semester must also be submitted, and original receipts for expenses incurred must be received by Prof. Robert Wheeler by 4:00 p.m. on<strong> March 30<sup>th<\/sup>, 2015<\/strong>: e-mail to <a href=\"mailto:robert.wheeler@umit.maine.edu\">robert.wheeler@umit.maine.edu<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Deductions on grant scores are strictly applied for failure to follow instructions so please <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">read carefully and read this document in its entirety. <\/span>Late submissions are not accepted. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grant application template is posted on the MBS Fellowships and Awards website: (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/\/umaine.edu\/biomed\/travel-fellowship-application-template\/\">http:\/\/\/umaine.edu\/biomed\/travel-fellowship-application-template\/<\/a>)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Categories <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You may only apply for funding in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one <\/span><\/strong>of the two categories: Travel to Present <strong>or <\/strong>Degree Related. Eligibility <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any UMaine graduate student studying Microbiology in the Molecular &amp; Biomedical Sciences Department at the University of Maine in good standing may submit an application and can only submit one application. Eligible expenses are only those incurred in attendance of a conference or other travel associated with completion of a graduate degree in MBS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funding Period <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grant applications will be considered for incurred or planned expenses for the 2014 Fall semester, 2015 Spring semester or 2015 Summer semester. Expense reports must be submitted by (<strong>Friday, September 20, 2015<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Graduate Student Status <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You must be studying Microbiology in the MBS department and enrolled in a graduate-level course for the semester you apply <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and <\/span><\/strong>the semester you plan to use the MBS funds.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Award amount<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These awards are for amounts up to $500.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Application Instructions Overview <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Deductions to your grant score are strictly applied for failure to follow instructions. <\/strong>Read directions carefully before submitting your application. You are encouraged to seek advice and assistance from your advisor, graduate students in your department who received travel grants in the past, the Writing Center in Neville Hall, or Prof. Robert Wheeler (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">robert.wheeler@umit.maine.edu<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Draft and review your application before submitting it at: (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">http:\/\/www2.umaine.edu\/gsg\/?page_id=35<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Submit the following data: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biographical information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>E-mail a single PDF <\/strong>that includes your abstract, budget, and budget explanation. Your PDF contains the only information reviewed by grant readers. Sample grant applications for a the slightly longer GSG grant are posted on the GSG Grants\u2019 website at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">http:\/\/www2.umaine.edu\/gsg\/?page_id=35<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow these directions for your PDF exactly or there will be deductions to your score: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>File name: <strong>\u201c2014Fall_XX_#####\u201d <\/strong>where XX indicates the funding category, and ##### are your initials. If you don\u2019t have receipts already then it is not a reimbursement regardless of when you get the grant money. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract: (one-page maximum, &lt;500 words) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Grant readers are from a wide range of disciplines, so write to an educated general audience. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>All abstracts should include a description of your research or area of concentration and its significance to your field. Be explicit; grant readers will not assume anything about your work or its importance. Their focus will depend on the category of the grant, so follow all relevant instructions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Travel to Present: <\/strong>Describe the conference\/meeting where you are presenting. Explain the importance of attending to your degree program, future career, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and <\/span><\/strong>the University of Maine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Degree-Related: <\/strong><em>Travel to workshops\/seminars directly related to your ongoing research and professional development, but not to present, are included in this category. <\/em>Explain how this purchase\/travel will benefit your graduate education and\/or research <strong>AND <\/strong>how it will help further the goals of the University of Maine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NOTE: All supplies purchased with MBS grant funds become the property of the University of Maine. Coordinate with your advisor (and notify MBS) as to who will receive the supplies once you graduate or leave the University. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Itemized Budget Deductions are strictly applied for failure to follow instructions. <\/strong>Your budget spreadsheet should be clear and easy to read. A sample budget is available on the GSG Grants\u2019 website at (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">http:\/\/www2.umaine.edu\/gsg\/?page_id=35<\/span>). Your total expenses may exceed the amount you can request from MBS, but you should include all expenses on the budget sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Record the amount requested from MBS in the <em>Amounts Requested <\/em>column. Cite all sources for expenses, including mileage used to calculate road transportation costs (e.g., Google, MapQuest, etc.). MBS reserves the right to verify all costs. ***Please do not apply for mileage when renting a car, this is covered in the cost of rental.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adhere to the University\u2019s expense limitations, and do not request more than allowed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meals: <\/strong>$46 per diem rate. Multiple price quotes are not required. For partial days use $9.20 for breakfast (20%), $11.50 for lunch (25%), and $25.30 for dinner (55%) as per http:\/\/www.umaine.edu\/obbs\/OBBSTravel.htm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mileage: <\/strong>$0.44 per mile. Multiple price quotes are not required. <strong>Handicap-Equipped Vehicle Mileage Rate: <\/strong>$0.54 per mile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Budget Explanation: (two-page maximum) Explain clearly and succinctly why each item on your itemized budget sheet is the best option within the context of your application. <\/strong>Provide grant readers with a clear understanding of how you will use any funds by presenting a detailed explanation for each item in your budget.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Reviewing and Scoring <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Grant readers span all disciplines. <\/strong>Therefore, it\u2019s best to write to an educated audience who may not be familiar with the jargon from your field of study. Grants are reviewed by faculty within the Molecular &amp; Biomedical Sciences Department. Readers will read for abstract clarity, budget explanation, formatting, and professional benefits. Review the Grant Readers instructions and score sheet to get an idea.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Awards &amp; Notification <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Notices of awards will be sent via FirstClass within one week of the grant-reading sessions. Applicants awarded funds may pick up their checks at the front desk of the MBS Department shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unclaimed checks at the end of the academic year (Aug. 31, 2015) will be deposited back into MBS accounts. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">VII. Obligations <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are awarded grant funding, note the following obligations and requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Proof of presentation is required for the travel-to-present category. <\/strong>Proof of presentation can be a listing on a website or a copy of the page from the book of conference abstracts. A <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">printed <\/span><\/strong>copy of your proof of presentation, along with your receipts, should be submitted after you receive notification that you were awarded funding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Funds can only be used for the items specifically approved in the application budget<\/strong>. Occasionally small adjustments may be required, and considerations will be made on a case-by-case basis. Be sure to include the semester, funding category, and your ID# on all correspondence to facilitate a response.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The MBS department encourages grant applicants to seek simultaneous funding from a variety of sources. <\/strong>You are expected to return unused grant funds when other funding is received for the same expenses or when planned expenditures cost less than budgeted.
