SUMMARY:Dan Hayes and Darryl Lyon: Spring 2019 UMaine Arctic Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:As part of the UMaine Arctic Initiative\, in partnership with the New England Arctic Network\, we are pleased to announce the first seminar in the Spring 2019 UMaine Arctic Seminar series. \nThis seminar series brings together researchers\, educators\, and others with interests in the high north and in how changes in the Arctic impact New England. The seminar series speakers will provide an overview of their area(s) of expertise and highlight topics they see as ripe for convergent engagement. Each event will consist of two 30-minute presentations\, followed by discussion. We aim for these seminars to educate the community about activities and opportunities in a wide range of fields and\, equally importantly\, to identify topics of common purpose and synergy. Please contact Jason Charland or Chris Gerbi with any questions or if you are interested in presenting in the Fall of 2019. This message is going out to people who have signed up for the UMaine Arctic Network using our Google form. Please encourage any others interested to join. \nFebruary 26th\, 2:30-4:00 in Room 48 Stodder\nDan Hayes\, School of Forest Resources\nDarryl Lyon\, Maine Army National Guard \n

SUMMARY:Strengthening the impact of your Arctic research
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening the impact of your Arctic research \nFebruary 28\, 12:00-1:30 in the Bangor Room at the Union \nThe National Science Foundation\, NASA\, and other large funding agencies have put an increasing emphasis on Broader Impacts in recent years. Yet researchers sometimes struggle with how to connect their intellectual goals to substantive public engagement and other non-research activities. The University of Maine has many programs on campus that partner with researchers\, as well as broad expertise on how to develop new programs. For this event\, we will host a panel of Laura Millay (Maine Center for Research in STEM Education)\, Linda Silka (Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions)\, and Greg Kranich (Cooperative Extension) to discuss existing programs and characteristics of successful research-education-outreach partnerships. In addition to what our panelists bring\, we look forward to a wider discussion about what UMaine does and can do to foster more activity in support of broader impacts. Please bring your ideas and encourage students to attend!
