A tagging study to understand sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) growth and movement in the Lower Penobscot Bay rotational management area

Lead PI: Phoebe Jekielek

Co-PI: Amber Lisi

Project Team: Hurricane Island, ME Department of Marine Resources

Abstract: This project will further several priorities of the Department of Marine Resources’s scallop program and inform parallel work by Hurricane Island assessing local wild scallop populations and rotational closed areas. It will also provide comparative wild scallop growth data to data being collected on cultured scallops on Hurricane Island and at farms along the Maine coast as part of a larger UMaine project. The primary objective focuses on enhancement of our knowledge of scallop movement and growth to inform the rotational management efforts. The analysis of tagging data in Zone 2 will serve as an auxiliary method of creating a growth function to compare with functions currently in use.
