After live mascots were outlawed in the state, UMaine adopted a “human bear.” In 1969, APO took responsibility for providing a mascot as part of the service fraternity’s community effort.<\/p>\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2700 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/150\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/311\/2015\/02\/Bananas-1-small.png\" alt=\"Bananas-1-small\" width=\"240\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/150\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/311\/2015\/02\/Bananas-1-small.png 240w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/150\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/311\/2015\/02\/Bananas-1-small-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/150\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/311\/2015\/02\/Bananas-1-small-99x140.png 99w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 85vw, (max-width: 768px) 67vw, (max-width: 1024px) 62vw,240px\" \/>1969–76
\n<\/strong>The first Bananas suit — a paper-mache head, a pair of legs, sweater and two genuine bear paws — was made by Drapeau’s Costume Shop in Lewiston, Maine. Student Robert Smullin, who brought Bananas to life, then worked with a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority to create a one-piece mascot suit in time for Homecoming.
