2012 Master Gardener Volunteer Training York County (Tentative) Schedule

 All training sessions are scheduled from 12:30 to 4:00 PM on Fridays at the Nasson Room of the Anderson Learning Center, 21 Bradeen Street, Springvale (except where noted).  Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for outside sessions.

 Friday, January 20, 2012-   Orientation to the Cooperative Extension and the Master Gardener Program, and Seed Starting with Frank Wertheim, Extension Educator

 Friday, January 27, 2012-    Soil Basics Part I, and Home Composting with Frank Wertheim, Extension Educator

 Friday, February 3, 2012-    Soil Basics Part II and Vermicomposting (worm bin) with Frank Wertheim, Extension Educator

 Friday, February 10, 2012-  Hunger in Maine and York County with Frank Wertheim and a representative of Partners for a Hunger Free York County, and Botany for Gardeners Part I with Frank Wertheim, Extension Educator

 Friday, February 17, 2012-   Botany for Gardeners part II and Plant ID using a dichotomous key with Frank Wertheim, Extension Educator and John Bozak, UNH Forestry Professor Emeritus

*Friday, February 24, 2012-  FIELD TRIP – Growing Winter Greens with Paul Lorrain, Sunset Farm Organics, Lyman

 Friday, March 2, 2012-          Volunteering in the Master Gardener Program part I (projects) with Frank Wertheim, Extension Educator, Sue Tkacik, UMaine Extension Horticulture Program Aide, and Various Extraordinary Master Gardener Volunteers

Friday, March 9, 2012-            Pesticide Selection, Use and Storage; and the YardScaping Program with Gary Fish, Board of Pesticides Control, Maine Department of Agriculture

 Friday, March 16, 2012-         Growing and Using Herbs with Amy Witt, UMaine Extension Horticulture Professional and Intensive Production Raised Beds, with Frank Wertheim,  Extension Educator

 Friday, March 23, 2012-         NO CLASS – Day before Annual Meeting

 ** Saturday, March 24, 2012  York County Master Gardener Annual Meeting, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM – at Laudholm Farm at Wells Reserve

 Friday, March 30, 2012-         Growing Small Fruit in Southern Maine (Highbush Blueberries, Strawberries, Brambles) with David Handley, Small Fruit Specialist, UMaine Extension

 Friday, April 6, 2012-              Good Agricultural Practices and Growing Grapes in Southern Maine with David Handley, Extension Small Fruit Specialist

 Friday, April 13, 2012-            NO CLASS – day before Maine Garden Day

 Friday, May 18, 2012-             Volunteering in the Master Gardener Program part II: Risk Management with UMaine Extension staff and Master Gardener Volunteers and Introduction to Permaculture, with Speaker to be Determined….

 Friday, June 1, 2012-               Entomology and Plant Pathology for Gardeners with Clay Kirby, Entomologist and Bruce Watt, Plant Pathologist, UMaine Extension

 Friday, June 8, 2012-               Snow Date – if we don’t need to use a snow day next week’s class will move up to this date.

 Friday, June 15, 2012-             Practical Final Exam – This exam has open book and closed book portions and Class Pictures – garden attire!  A Master Gardener Celebration will take place after the exam
