“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.”
- Rebecca West (1913)
Be sure to visit the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Library in 101 Fernald Hall.
Our library includes over 4,500 volumes, audiocassettes, and videos, as well as a number of periodicals, many of which are not available at Fogler Library. Most materials may be signed out on loan or photocopied here.
Our collection of Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies alternative press periodicals is now fully organized and cataloged in the Women’s Studies Office in Fernald Hall on campus, Room 101B. This is a large collection of newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters and zines for, about, and by women from over the US, Canada, and the UK, with the majority dating from the 1970s-1980s.
Many of these are rare examples of women’s small-scale alternative press, and focus on topics such as: women’s liberation, lesbian and gay organizing, race and power issues, working women, and arts and literature. Quite a few were produced by short-lived collective organizations.
This collection is is available for student and faculty research during Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies office hours. Please come and check out this amazing resource for students of History, Anthropology, Sociology, Communications, and Philosophy, and Women’s Studies.
We also have a small collection of audio materials.
While our collection is growing, our library is still manageably sized and inviting, enabling both serious research and comfortable browsing.
We are in the process of putting our collection on URSUS, but our old-fashioned card catalogue will continue to tell you what we have.
Our diverse video collection covers many subjects pertaining to women and women’s issues and includes commercially made movies, documentaries, and interviews. We also have videos of our annual Mary Ann Hartman Awards ceremonies, Women’s History Celebration speakers, and many of our Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies lunch sessions.
Recent grants, including three from the Bird and Bird Instructional Improvement Fund and one from the Lannon Literary Foundation, have enabled us to add to our growing collection with titles concerning women of color and global feminism, as well as interviews and readings by notable American women authors.
All of our videos can be viewed here (if the conference room is available) or checked out for two or three days.
We also encourage suggestions for future acquisitions.
