Research - Seed Rain Project

Rob Johanson sowing a cover crop

Rob Johanson sowing a cover crop

Here Rob Johanson is sowing a fall cover crop using a no-till drill to keep weed seed rain from the preceding crop at or near the soil surface and available to weed seed predators which we experimentally exclude using the mesh cages shown. We have found predation losses as high as 50% over the fall, winter and early spring months. Somewhat unexpectedly, this treatment has also experienced very high levels of losses due to seedling recruitment. This project is supported by the Northeast SARE competitive grants program.
