Rain Gardens in Maine
February 21st, 2012 I’m getting a lot of interest in rain garden training this year – which is wonderful for me! I’ve already talked to a group at the Merryspring Nature Center in Camden, and will be working with LaMarr Clannon from Maine NEMO (http://www.mainenemo.org/) to do a half-day presentation on rain gardens and other green tools for water protection at the Maine Landscape and Nursery Association’s Recertification workshop on February 29th (see http://www.melna.org/calendar.html) (happy LEAP YEAR!).Why the interest in rain gardens? I suspect it’s partly because we’re seeing more of them, and they’re beautiful, so more people want them. As well, some of our larger cities need to figure out how to keep stormwater/polluted runoff water from reaching streams, lakes and rivers, and rain gardens are an effective way to clean up that water!
Whatever the reason, I’m looking forward to more rain garden work this spring! For more information on rain gardens in Maine, see http://umaine.edu/waterquality/lid/rain-gardens/. If your group would like me to come and do a training, let me know!
