Waldo County Master Gardener Volunteers

All in-person Master Gardener Volunteer related activities are suspended until further notice, including, but not limited to plant sales, meetings, and workdays.

There will be modifications made to the volunteer hour reporting requirements for all new and existing Master Gardener Volunteers in the near future. Please contact your MGV Coordinators if you have any questions and/or concerns. The situation will continually be assessed and updates will be provided to all active Master Gardener Volunteers and partner organizations.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers program provides participants with at least 40 hours of in-depth training in the art and science of horticulture. Trainees receive current, research-based information from UMaine Extension educators and industry experts. In return, trained Master Gardeners volunteer their time and expertise in many ways for community programs and activities.

Last Year:

1030 Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) gave nearly 39,000 hours for educational and food security projects!

MGVs supported:

  • 79 community gardens
  • 45 school gardens
  • 53 demonstration gardens
  • 34 programs involving 7,064 youth in horticulture activities

MGVs distributed:

  • 213,770 pounds of food to 130 food distribution agencies and countless neighbors in need as part of the Maine Harvest for Hunger program.

Who Can Become a Master Gardener Volunteer?

Master Gardener Volunteers are people of all types who want to make a difference. They want to use their gardening skills to create positive change in their communities. Whether working with students on a school garden, teaching a workshop on making great compost, growing and donating produce to Maine Harvest for Hunger or beautifying a public space, Master Gardener Volunteers take an active role in making things happen!

Everyone who successfully completes the 40+ hours of training and volunteers 40 hours towards community gardening programs and activities can become a Master Gardener Volunteer.
