Waldo County 4-H Leaders’ Association Meeting Dates

  • 2nd Wednesday of the month
  • 6:00pm 4-H Volunteer Networking
  • 6:30pm Meeting Starts, all 4-H volunteers are encouraged and welcomed to attend scheduled monthly meetings. Each 4-H group (club, independent family members and Afterschool) are responsible for sending one representative for their group. Parking and Entrance lower level parking lot.

Citizenship Washington Focus Educational Trip

The 4-H Enrollment data base recognizes you as a possible Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) delegate during the week of July 1 to 7, 2012. Waldo County 4-H Citizen Washington Focus (CWF) Interviews

Are you interested in participating in the 2012 Citizen Washington Focus (CWF) educational trip? Are you enrolled in the Waldo County 4-H program? The Waldo County leaders’ association welcomes enrolled 4-H members to apply for CWF Scholarship. 4-H members applying for scholarships are asked to support annual Waldo County Leaders’ Association fundraising efforts. CWF Scholarship application packets are available at the Waldo County office. Please save February 8, 2012 for your late afternoon interview.


Waldo County 4-H Exhibit At Maine Farmland Trust Gallery

From January 17th through February 20th, 2012, Maine Farmland Trust Gallery will be hosting an exhibit compiled by several youth members of Waldo County 4H. Under the supervision of Marilyn Schofield, Nicole, Shaynen and Mackensie Schofield put together a pictorial overview of 4H activities which center on agriculture, food preservation, and wood science.

Viewers can expect to see not only photographs of 4H clubs working with animals or learning the ropes of food preservation, but also a collection of drawings by the Cloverbuds, the youngest 4H club. Some 4H youth members have created specific educational displays which cover a certain topic, such as the growth of a lamb, or poultry farming. Come in and enjoy the exhibit, and see what Waldo County’s 4H is up to!

The Gallery is located at 97 Main Street in Belfast and is open M-F, 9-4pm.


STATE NEWS

Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove 4-H Camp and Learning Centers!

1st Annual Snowshoe Race

Join us for the first annual Tanglewood 5k Snowshoe Race on Saturday, February 18, at 1pm at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center off Ducktrap Road in Lincolnville. The event is a fundraiser for needed repairs to the historic stone fireplace and chimney in our dining hall.

The race trail includes woodsy, hilly terrain and views of the Ducktrap River. Register in advance on-line or on race day. Registration is open to anyone 13 years old and older. The fee of $25.00 includes hot soup, cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.

For children twelve and under we are offering the opportunity to participate in a fun 500- yard snowshoe dash. Children’s snowshoes will be available for the dash on a first-come, first-serve basis.

February Vacation Camp

Journey through the snowy forest to Big Pine Lodge at Tanglewood in Lincolnville, from where you will embark on adventures to find out where animals hide in winter and how they survive! Enjoy sledding, art and the warmth of hot chocolate and a cozy wood-heated cabin!

February 21 & 22 for ages 6-8

February 23 & 24 for ages 9-13

Programs take place from 9:00AM -2:00PM each day; after care is available from 2-4:00PM.

Cost: $65/child for the 2-day program; aftercare fee is $15

Tanglewood’s trails are open to the public for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing!  Trail maps are available at the kiosk at the head of the trail as well as on our website. Trails are maintained primarily by volunteers – please contact Sharon Gilbert at 207-789-5868 if you are interested in volunteering!

 

MAINE 4-H DAYS

2012 Maine 4-H Days

The 2012 Maine 4-H Days will take place June 22 – 24, 2012 at the Windsor Fairgrounds.  More information and registration packets will be available in mid-Spring of 2012 at: http://umaine.edu/4h/youth/4-h-events/maine-4-h-days/.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS
4-H Foundation Post-Secondary Education Scholarships
The 4-H Foundation’s Post-Secondary Education Scholarships are available to participants in the 4-H Program, pursuing higher education. Because some scholarships have different sets of guidelines, please refer to the 4-H Foundation’s website (http://umaine.edu/4hfoundation/funding/) when applying. Deadlines for the applications are as follows: March 2, 2012 to the UMaine Cooperative Extension County Office, March 9, 2012 to the 4-H Foundation Office.  Recipients receiving the scholarship awards will be invited to the Foundation’s Annual Meeting on May 16, 2012.

 

MARKET BEEF
Market Beef Forms
All 4-Hers in the Market Beef project who plan to raise a steer for the Windsor Fair or Fryeburg Fair in 2012, need to send in an “Intent-to-Sell” form to their County Cooperative Extension office by January 3, 2012. The forms are available at your county office and on-line at http://umaine.edu/4h/youth/4-h-projects/animal-science-resources/beef/

In January, you will be contacted about the time and place to tag your steer. The person tagging your steer will have an approval form for you to fill out and s/he will record your tag numbers. The person tagging your steer will send your Market Animal Approval Form to the State 4-H Office and they will send you an embossed copy of your Approval Form.  If you have questions, please contact Michaele Bailey at the State 4-H Office at 581-3872 or 1-800-287-0274.

 

NATIONAL 4-H TRIPS

National 4-H Trips Applications Due
National 4-H Trips are excellent opportunities to meet 4-H members from across the nation. Participants learn about many career options, and learn through educational workshops at Congress or become a part of a team making recommendations to National 4-H Council at Conference. DAIRY
4-H Dairy Project members—Hold the Dates in 2012
Please hold the following dates for your participation in the State 4-H Dairy Programs:

Dairy Quiz Bowl is February 19, at the Farm Bureau office in Augusta. Time TBA. Open to all 4-H Dairy project members.

  • Dairy judging – April 14, time and location TBA. Open to all 4-H Dairy project members.
  • Intent to Participate Form due May 1, 2012 for 4-H Dairy Team to Eastern States
  • Competition – July 21, 5:00 pm at the Windsor Fairgrounds
  • Maine State 4-H Dairy Show – July 22, 9:00 am at the Windsor Fairgrounds. The new dairy packet will be posted in February.

CWF 

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF)
Start making plans now to visit our Nation’s Capital during the week of July 1 to 7, 2012. CWF is a leadership program conducted by the National 4-H Council for high school youth ages 15 to 18. Delegations of 4-Hers from across the country spend six days touring the city and attending leadership skill-building workshops. This summer, the Maine delegation will travel on July 1 to July 7, 2012. You will stay at the National 4-H Conference Center just outside Washington, DC. Visiting the most popular sites in Washington will be a part of the trip, including spending the 4th of July in our nation’s capital. SCIENCE ROAD SHOW

UMaine Extension 4-H Science Road Show

  • looking for four host sites from various locations in the state
  • between March and June 2012 to
  • host a 3½ hour regional training
  • hosting sites commits you to two things:

Ø provide space for training

Ø helping to recruit club volunteers from your county

  • time frame and day based on the needs of your volunteers:  9:00-12:30pm, 1:00-4:30pm or 5-8:30pm.

Training Agenda:  4-H Science Made Simple

45 mins. The Basics of Inquiry-Based Science! Participate in a fun activity to learn about to lead Inquiry- based science.

60 mins. Science Skill-a-thon! Try out a variety of quick and easy science activities.

15 mins. Break

30 mins. Adapting Activities-Easier Than You Thought! How to make an activity age appropriate.

40 mins. Think-Tank Time! Learn from each other how science can look in a club and plan how you  will take what you have learned in the workshop and use it with your club.

20 mins.  Wrap Up and Next Steps

SHEEP

2012 Sheep Shearing Schools

Blade Shearing School* with expert blade shearer, Kevin Ford

Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, 2012        Fee $100/person

Participation limited to 8 individuals.  Site in Maine to be determined

* Blade shearing is the shearing of sheep with hand shears (no electricity).  This hands-on, 2-day school will equip participants with skills and knowledge to shear sheep and in the proper use and care of hand shears.  Shears are provided for the school and will be available for purchase.
