Great fit

What’s the hottest spot on campus? UMaine’s New Balance Student Recreation and Fitness Center. This spa-like facility boasts enough free weights and cardio equipment so you’ll never have to wait in line, dozens of classes and a suspended indoor track. Looking for something a little less intense? Relax in the pool, hot tub or sauna.

Out and about

For many students, the great outdoors is a huge part of the UMaine experience. Here are a few popular road trips:

Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park
(1½ hours): Great hiking and climbing, a sand beach and fantastic seafood await.

Sugarloaf USA/Sunday River
(1½ hours, 2½ hours, respectively): Some of the best skiing and boarding in the East is within easy driving distance of campus.

Mount Katahdin/Baxter State Park (1½ hours): Maine’s tallest mountain (pictured) is a popular climb for UMaine students.

Outdoor adventure

You’re intrigued by the idea of ice climbing, but you don’t know a crampon from an axe. Maine Bound, the University of Maine’s outdoor adventure center, can help. You don’t need to be a biathlete to join in the fun, because courses and trips are open to all skill levels. Students can learn about kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, climbing, hiking, backpacking, wilderness first aid and more.

The D-I difference

UMaine is the state’s only Division I school, so athletics are a big deal here. In other words, it’s perfectly normal to scream your face off while watching hockey with 5,000 of your closest friends at Alfond Arena.

Learn more about UMaine’s D-I sports by visiting the Black Bear Athletics website.
