UVAC operates differently from most EMS agencies in that we have a crew of three people on each shift. As a learning service, new members start out as the “Attendant” who assists the crew with equipment and is able to watch patient care and assessment. This learning role is important to training new members in EMS operations as well as patient care. The “Crew Chief” on every call is a licensed EMT that is thoroughly vetted in EMS operations and patient care. In addition to their initial training as an EMT, all Crew Chief Candidates are expected to complete additional training with another experienced provider to ensure their skills are exceptional. Crew Chief’s are responsible for all patient care, as well as ensuring safety of the crew. Finally, the Driver is responsible for the safe operation of the ambulance, and providing transport to and from emergency scenes. The Driver may or may not be a licensed EMT, but will still assist the Crew Chief as needed.

There are three EMS license levels at which an ambulance may respond at:

UVAC ambulances typically are staffed with an EMT or AEMT on most calls. If a patient needs further care beyond the scope of what our provider can deliver, our crews can intercept a Paramedic for Advanced Life Support (ALS) from one of the local fire departments. Our ambulances are equipped with all the supplies and medications necessary to deliver care at any level, should it be needed.
