UBC: What would it mean to you and to your business to win the UMaine Business Challenge?
AerialFly: Winning the UMaine Business Challenge would enable AerialFly to instantly scale our operations from a proof of concept to a full-fledged, operational business. Our goal is to bootstrap the business without loans, so it would be great if we could win some money to accomplish this.
UBC: You have many challenges on your road to entrepreneurship and to conquer these will inevitably take hard work and dedication. With that in mind, what is the inspiration behind starting your own business?
AerialFly: Jacob and I are constantly scheming up business ideas. It’s fun for us, and this is one of them. The inspiration is simply seeing a need in the marketplace, and seeking to fulfill that need with something we offer. The process of flight has always captivated Jacob, and the opportunity to combine technology, flight, new perspectives, and the natural beauty of Maine excites both of us. From a young age, we have been very competitive, and this drive has slowly progressed from athletics to building a sustainable business. Even our horrible business ideas have served a purpose, and have been constant learning experiences.
UBC: Part of the mission of the UBC is to take Maine from 51 to 35 on best states for business. Why have you decided to start your business in Maine?
AerialFly: Maine is incredibly beautiful, and has some of the best natural resources in the country. We intend to help showcase this beauty from new, fresh perspectives. Also, Maine businesses such as Cianbro are doing huge things in construction, and Maine is slowly being put back onto the industrial map. If we could help spread the word on this, we’d be incredibly happy. We have decided to start here because it is home to us, and we don’t really want to be anywhere else. We are also both still in school (in Maine), so it is the practical choice for us.
UBC: We love our Alma Mater, so we have to ask, what’s your favorite thing about UMaine?
AerialFly: My favorite thing about UMaine is the Business School faculty. They are top-notch instructors with huge amounts of experience in the real world. In my opinion, the best part is that they are very approachable, helpful, and genuinely interested in the success of the students.
