Chances are, if you’re reading this page, you’re an Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) staff member. This summer has the opportunity to be a huge learning experience both for you and for the students. You will have the chance to learn more about yourself: your strengths and challenges as a leader, mentor and instructor, how people respond to your personality, and how to design and implement research projects with high school students. You already possess everything you need to be successful. Upward Bound will simply give you the opportunity to bring these qualities alive!
UBMS Summer Academic Staff after Community Meeting, 2013
Summer program is your chance to help students learn to ask scientific questions and critically consider the possible answers. As instructors and mentors, you may find that you are asking questions about education, such as: How do students work best in groups? What is the most effective way to teach the concept of graphing data? Am I doing too much for my students and not allowing them to explore? Am I afraid to allow a student to fail because of how it might make me look? What is the best way to solve group conflict? Whatever your questions, you will be working in a dynamic laboratory of educational experiences helping you to answer them this summer.
