Leadership Programs - Leadership Three

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Tanglewood’s Leadership Programs is that the Leadership 3 (L3) program was conceived by L1 and L2 graduates.

This program is designed for older teens who want to continue to develop their skills in the outdoors, while preparing to lead youth. Participants spend much of the first week training in CPR and First AID, learning and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics, and developing further skills in leadership, trip planning, and group development. The L3′s then get to test their skills on a 10-day trek along the “100 Mile Wilderness” of the Appalachian Trail culminating in Mt. Katahdin, the tallest mountain in Maine. The group will then take the time to reflect on its expedition and give back through a service project in Baxter State Park.

For many, L3 is a gateway to becoming strong and confident in their leadership skills. The final portion of the session is spent using, developing and exploring skills in a practical hands-on environment. Days and evenings will be spent supporting counselors with cabin leadership and leading camp activities. In addition, time will be spent with a leadership mentor, learning new skills and debriefing the joys and challenges of camp leadership. With new responsibility comes new freedom, allowing time for relaxing and building lasting friendships.

“Take the opportunity to step into a leadership role, lead a group successfully and also stand back to learn from peers.  This is the chance to give back to Tanglewood.” —L3 participant

L3 requires responsibility and commitment. It prepares young leaders for future success, while providing hands on experience and life-long memories. Many graduates decide to take the step up to summer staff in the following years. Participants are required to write a letter of intent stating personal goals and how this program will benefit their development. Please include your letter with the registration form. Accommodation can be made if writing is a concern.
