Staff Training: June 15 to 17 and June 20 to 24 (includes whitewater raft trip)

Preparation Week: June 27 to July 1 (off July 2, 3 and 4)

Residential Camp: July 5 to August 19

Weekends: Off, except July 30-31 (two week camp session) and August 20-21 (breakdown, clean-up, end of season celebration)

“Focus Leader” Intern Descriptions

From 9AM to Noon each day, campers will spend time learning and exploring in a focus area that they chose for the week.  The four focus areas and resources for each are listed below.  Focus leaders will have a combination of support and independence when designing the curriculum during the preparation week.  As environmental educators we all hope the next generation of youth will become adults who want to care for and protect the natural world.  At Blueberry Cove we believe that youth, who are given the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Maine, will become adults who love the natural world.  The first step in the education process is to give children the outdoor experiences that lead to a love of our natural world.  In today’s overscheduled, cyber childhood there are fewer and fewer opportunities for this to happen.  Blueberry Cove is an unplugged zone, where children are immersed in the outdoors under the guidance of caring adults!

  • Farm & Garden: a ¼ acre, organic vegetable garden, composting system, hoop house, meadows and fields, hens, goats, rabbits, pigs and sheep.  In addition to animal and garden care, this focus creates butterfly gardens, plans to encourage helpful bugs and discourage pests, bird houses to attract bug eating birds…the possibilities are endless.
  • Marine Discovery: 1400 feet of inter-tidal zone, access to an island and sand bars, row boats, recreational & instructional lobster licenses, high powered microscopes, plankton tows, a local lobsterman who supports the program, a designated building and lots of curriculum resources.

  • Sustainable Arts: It is our hope that every camper goes home with a treasured keepsake that was created at camp.  The sustainable arts program will have the budget to support this goal.  Examples of potential projects include felting with the wool from the sheep, painting from natural dyes and mobiles made with beach treasures.
  • Sailing: is run by the Saint George Community Sailing Foundation.  Evening sails are offered to staff and campers when a skilled sailing instructor is available.

“Sustainable Living” Intern Description

Each day from 1-4 PM campers will participate in activities that contribute to sustaining their camp community.  The Sustainable Living Interns will organize these activities.  At Blueberry Cove sustainability includes the physical, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of life in balance, so activity choices are very broad.  Each camp session will complete a group project that supports the long term sustainability of Blueberry Cove.  Weekly project examples include:  create a frog pond for day camp, make a bird blind or create a rain barrel system.  Daily activity examples include baking bread for the camp, washing day camp table linens using an old wringer washer, making ice cream for dessert, harvesting from the garden, field games, trips to a local beach, hiking to Roaring Spout, boating as a means to reach a destination (rather than driving)…

“Garden & Sea to Table” Intern Description

This intern will work closely with all other interns and the camp cook to ensure that the food harvested from the garden and sea actually makes it to the table!  Ideally the campers will be a big part of this process.  Predicting when a crop will be ready, harvesting, cleaning, storing and then determining ways to incorporate the crop into the menu will be the main function of this intern.  Last year we made blueberry freezer jam, pickles, chocolate cake with beets and many more delicious treats.  We also have recipe books for wild edibles on the property.  Each week campers experience an old fashioned lobster bake on the beach!

“Outdoor Discovery Trip Leader” Intern Description

Blueberry Cove’s Island & Sea Trip is offered to 10 campers per session; ages 12 to 15 years old.  Rain or shine, campers spend 5 nights and 6 days canoeing about a protected yet vast cove, exploring pristine coastal islands, swimming in aquamarine quarries, digging clams, discovering remote beaches and fishing for dinner.  Each afternoon they return to their island campsite where they participate in all aspects of meal preparation and practice leave no trace camping techniques.  Basic navigation skills are part of each excursion.  Near the end of the trip, when food rations are seemingly getting slim a local lobsterman drops off an unexpected feast from the sea.  Campers are totally immersed in all the wonders of coastal Maine!
