The Libraries

Fogler Libarary

The Raymond H. Fogler Library on the Orono campus is the largest library in the State of Maine. It contains an excellent collection of materials to support undergraduate and graduate studies as well as rich and varied research collections including more than 1,087,570 volumes, 5,438 current subscriptions, 1.64 million microforms, more than 2,302 million U.S. and Canadian government publications and access to more than 25,000 online serials and more than 200 databases.  The Library also houses the Patent and Trademark Depository and is the Science, Technology and Business Research Library for the State of Maine.  The library at the Ira C. Darling Center in Walpole houses a specialized collection of books, journals, and reprints devoted to Marine Studies.

Specialized collections include Maine-related materials, sound recordings, music scores, maps, manuscripts, and educational materials. Access to library services, resources, and materials is available through Fogler Library’s website (http://library.umaine.edu). Services and resources include subject guides, electronic reserves, and databases.  URSUS, the on-line catalog that includes the holdings of all the University of Maine System libraries is also available from the website.

The Reference Department is the contact point for general reference assistance. The Department provides research assistance, database searching, and conducts instruction in the social sciences, humanities, business, and education. The Science and Engineering Center, serves the scientific reference, instruction, and research needs of the University Community and public.

Students and faculty may borrow books from any of the UM campus libraries using the online requestor function and through MaineCat, which allows online borrowing among the member libraries. Other materials may be requested from Fogler’s Interlibrary Loan Department, which provides desktop delivery for many requests.

University Bookstore

At the University of Maine, students have the opportunity to select books from one of the largest and most comprehensive text and general book inventories in New England. Other merchandise includes academic supplies, art materials, insignia clothing and gifts, CD’s and videos, calculators, sundry items, magazines and greeting cards. Students and visitors are generally able to satisfy their ordinary needs at competitive prices.
Among the services offered by the Bookstore: gift cards, special order books, college rings, textbook buy back and check cashing/postal services. To coincide with evening sessions, extended hours will be offered dependent on class scheduling. Call 207-581-1700 or check our web site at www.bookstore.umaine.edu for more information.

Counseling Center

The mission of The University of Maine Counseling Center is to help students attain their educational and career goals and achieve their best possible educational performance by providing prevention and educational programs, and personal counseling. During the Summer University we provide time-limited group and individual counseling and psychotherapy to students taking one or more courses, who are experiencing educational, vocational, personal and emotional concerns.

Students interested in an appointment with one of our staff to discuss their concerns should contact the Counseling Center at (207) 581-1392.
In the event of a crisis, you may contact the Counseling Center during regular daily hours of operation. If the crisis is after hours or on a weekend, you may contact Public Safety at 581-4040, the Northeast Crisis Hotline at 1-888-568 1112, or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
Location: Cutler Health Center Building on the North side facing Gannet Hall.

Emergency Services

Police, fire and ambulance services are available twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week. Dial 911 on campus telephones for emergencies.

For non-emergencies, dial 1-4040 for police, fire and ambulance services. When calling from off-campus, call (207) 581-4040. Please refer to the Safety Directory in front of the Staff Telephone Directory for more detailed emergency services.

Health Services

To meet the needs of students at The University of Maine, Cutler Health Center offers comprehensive healthcare to the university student community.

We’ve renovated our facility at the Cutler Health Center and expanded our hours and services to better meet students’ needs. Cutler Health Center is open 9 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday.

You can schedule an appointment by calling 581-4000, or through RelayHealth.

Healthcare providers are also available after hours and on weekends. These services may be provided at EMMC Orono Family Medicine, located on Kelly Road in Orono, or at Walk-In Care, located on Union Street in Bangor.

Transportation to off-campus appointments and the emergency room are offered by the University through a local taxi service at no cost to the student.

We encourage students to achieve a higher level of awareness and knowledge, and to be a partner in their own health care needs. We function as a resource to provide health care that is high quality, cost-effective, and comprehensive to meet the needs of each individual student.

The Career Center

The Career Center, located on the third floor of the Memorial Union, provides a range of services to assist students in exploring career options, making career decisions, and seeking employment or admission to graduate/professional school. Staff members provide individual career counseling by appointment. Also available to students are CHOICES and FOCUSII, two computerized career guidance programs.

Special programs are available on an on-going basis including the Career Library, an annual Career Fair, a career exploration workshop series, a videotape library on careers and employers, and the Maine Mentor Program. The Maine Mentor Program links students wishing to gain first-hand career information with alumni in a variety of career fields.

During the student’s final year of study, placement assistance for full-time employment is available. These services include job listings, resume critiques, access to employer directories, access to job and employer information via Internet, resume referrals, and an on-campus recruiting program during the academic year. An electronic system, eRecruiting, allows students and employers to streamline the application and interviewing process.
