- Requests for refunds for dropped courses must be made on the first day of the course.
- No Refunds will be issued after this date.
Adding a Course – Students may add Summer University courses to their schedule at any time prior to the beginning of the course. However, students may not add a Summer University course after the second class of that session has met. This policy is strictly enforced because of the abbreviated summer sessions.
Dropping a Course
Dropping a Course – Students may drop their course(s) using Mainestreet, or by emailing, or calling the Office of Continuing & Distance Education / Summer University at (207)581-3143, or by visiting our CED/Summer University Office in 122 Chadbourne Hall, Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm.
Registrations are not automatically canceled when a student fails to attend a course and does not officially notify the University as described above. Informing faculty that you are dropping a course is not an official drop. The date a course is dropped dictates both academic and financial penalties which may affect student standing as described below.

A. Academic Penalties
During the first third of the course, a student may drop courses without academic penalty. During the second third of the course, a student may withdraw from a course with approval from the student’s advisor and dean. Courses dropped will appear on the student’s academic record with a grade of “W”. The grade will not be computed into the semester average. During the final third of a course, any course dropped will carry a grade of “F”. Academic penalties for dropping a course offered in abbreviated calendars (Summer University) will be calculated according to the length of the course.
B. Financial Penalties
Requests for refunds for dropped courses must be made on the first day of the course. NO REFUNDS will be issued after this date.

Audit/Pass Fail/Credit Hours
Once a student is registered for a course, changes may be made within a specified time. For example, changes in registration may be made prior to the third class of a three- or eight-week session and prior to the fourth day of five- and six-week session. This applies to a change from audit or pass/fail to a credit basis, or vice versa. For changes, Degree students should contact their advisor or department. Non-degree student changes are made by Summer University office in room 122 Chadbourne Hall or by calling (207)581-3143.
Courses in the Summer University may be taken on a grade, pass/fail or audit basis. Pass/fail courses carry degree credit but are not calculated into the grade point average. With an audit registration, the student participates in class work similar to a student registered for credit but generally is not required to prepare reports or take examinations. Students should check the audit requirement with the instructor prior to enrolling in the class. Degree students should check with their advisors before registering for any course on a pass/fail or audit basis.
One three-credit course in a three-week session, or two three-credit courses in a six-week session is considered a maximum registration. It is possible to enroll in multiple courses providing there are no scheduling conflicts. Undergraduates who show an unusually good scholastic record on the basis of previous work, may secure permission to elect hours above the ordinary maximum registration.
