Campus Life

There’s never a dull moment at the University of Maine! There are events and activities every day of the week, over 200 student organizations, athletic events, Greek organizations, and more.

Campus Activities and Student Engagement provides FREE entertainment on campus for all students. On Wednesday, check out the latest movies at Kickin’ Flicks in the Collins Center for the Arts! Other events to watch out for are monthly Bingo games, Halloween Week, Family and Friends weekend, Winter Carnival week, and Stress Free Finals.

One of the best parts of Maine life is its recreation opportunities and outdoor activities. Through the New Balance Student Fitness Center, Campus Recreation offers everything from recreation facilities to intramurals, to sports clubs to fitness classes. The MaineBound provides trips and courses in rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking, camping, and hiking just to name a few. The MaineBound Adventure Center offers a state-of-the art indoor climbing facility and outdoor equipment rental program.

Perhaps the largest part of campus life is actually living on campus. Currently, there are seventeen residence halls and two villages. In the halls, you will find a mixture of students from all classes and all majors, offering a well-rounded experience. In addition, many halls will offer special programming–both fun and educational–for their residents. For more information about the kinds of housing options available, visit the Residence Life website. To find out how to apply for on campus housing visit the Housing Services website.

Did you know that there are over 200 student organizations at the University of Maine? If you are interested in a social group, a political group, or something in between, there is an organization that is perfect for you! To see a partial list of student organizations, visit the Student Organization and Leader Development website.

Do you enjoy sports? The University of Maine is a NCAA Division I school, and home to several championship teams. Whether you enjoy hockey, basketball, or any other sport, there are several events to suit your taste! For information on athletics and to check for upcoming games, visit the www.goblackbears.com

UMaine also provides many cultural activities for the University and the surrounding community. If you enjoy strolling through a museum, yet cannot afford the trip to New York, the Museum of Art offers the same experience free of charge for students with a MaineCard! Each year, the museum displays work by both well-known and local artists, as well as the much-anticipated Student Art Exhibition each Spring. Hudson Museum offers exhibits of cultural art and artifacts. If you like stargazing, Jordan Planetarium offers many public shows throughout the year. For a wide variety of performances, including theatre, dance, and music, the Collins Center for the Arts offers everything you’re looking for. For a discounted rate, students can enjoy many fine performances–ranging from big name acts to smaller, local productions. Finally, The School of Performing Arts produces professional quality student shows throughout the year, from band and choral concerts, to theatre and dance performances. Best of all, the shows are free to students!

Finally, if you aren’t sure what you’re in the mood for, or if you just want to see what kinds of events are happening on campus, take a look at the Campus Master Calendar. Here you can see all of the cultural events, games, and student run activities for any given day. With the Master Calendar, you’ll always find something to do!

Another very important part of student life on campus is FOOD! There are four dining commons, conveniently located near the residence halls. If commons food doesn’t strike your fancy, or if you just need a little break, there are plenty of other dining options. The Oakes Room Cafe provides a great place to get a coffee and a snack and is conveniently located in Fogler Library. The Bear’s Den offers several dining options, including Sushi with Gusto, Black Bear Bakery, the Deli and more. For more information on locations and food service options visit the Dining Services¬†website.

Becoming a part of a Greek organization is another great way to get involved in campus life and to meet new people. There are several fraternities and sororities at UMaine–both social and service organizations. For more information about Greek life and Greek organizations at UMaine visit their website.

For information about campus policies, rules, and regulations, the Student Handbook is available online.
