Student Employee Policies

There are a number of general employment policies which are either University or State regulation which all employers and employees must abide by. Please make sure to review the policies carefully.

Break Policy

Child Labor Laws:

Since the University of Maine does employ students under the age of 18, it is important that employers are aware of the State of Maine Child Labor Laws, effecting the when and where a student under 18 can work.

Confidentiality Policy:

While a confidentiality agreement is not required, the Office of Student Employment strongly recommends all students sign one, especially if they handle personal information, including interacting with students or faculty and staff in order to protect the employer, the student and the personal information. The Confidentiality Agreement should be kept in the student’s employment file with the employer.

Graduate Students:

Graduate students are able to be paid through regular student employment, as long as they meet the requirements (i.e degree program and enrolled at least half-time).

Graduate Assistants

High School Students:

The University of Maine does hire high school students occasionally.  Departments must ensure they are adhering to Child Labor Laws when employing high school students.

High school students should indicate the name of their high school on the Student Employment Work Authorization when they complete the form with their hiring department.  In addition, if a high school student has not worked for the University of Maine in the past 12 months, they will be required to complete I-9 and tax paperwork through the Office of Student Employment.
