Tom Mikotowicz teaches directing, playwriting, history, and performance theory. A professor of theatre, he received his doctorate from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. As a director, Professor Mikotowicz has staged hundreds of productions in professional, educational, and community theatres throughout the country. He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SSDC) and his eclectic productions include: Brecht/Weill’s Threepenny Opera, Euripedes’ The Women of Troy, Gogol’s Marriage, Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Lapine/Sondheim’s Into the Woods, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Durang’s Bette and Boo, Shevelove/Gelbart/Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Parnell’s The Rise and Rise of Daniel Rocket, Kander/Ebb’s Chicago, Mee’s Wintertime, Mozart/Da Ponte’s The Marriage of Figaro, Aristophanes’ The Birds, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. He has also written and directed several industrial videos for NYU and NBC television in Manhattan.
Currently serving as the Chair of the division of Theatre/Dance in the School of Performing Arts at the University of Maine, Professor Mikotowicz has experience in theatre management. He is a past president of the New England Theatre Association, and a member of the New England Theatre Conference College of Fellows. Also, Dr. Mikotowicz has published extensively, with his writings appearing both in the United States and Europe. He has written the books Oliver Smith and Theatrical Designers, and has contributed to several others, including The Cambridge Guide to Theatre, Theatrical Directors, and Contemporary Designers. He has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and served as an associate editor for the New England Theatre Journal and Theatre Design and Technology. Finally, he has co-edited a performance theory book with Kurt Lancaster for McFarland Publishers called Performing the Force: The Immersion into Science-Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Environments and contributed a chapter on computer game simulations.
