Capturing the Day Tripping Tourist: Cruise Ship and Destination Event Visitors

Acclaimed scholar Elinor Ostrom visits the School of Economics.
Ostrom is the co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2001.  She is an expert on “common pool” or shared resources, which include resources such as fisheries, forests and grazing lands. She has studied interactions between humans and these natural resources, with an emphasis on strategies that promote long-term, sustainable yields.

smithMaine Department of Agriculture 2009 Commissioner’s Distinguished Service Award was presented to Professor Stewart N. Smith. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, clear vision for the future, tireless commitment of time and serving as a strong advocate for Maine’s Agricultural Community. In the presentation Commissioner Bradstreet noted both his current and past activities, including:

  • USDA Agency Administrator in the 1970s
  • Maine Commissioner of Agriculture in the 1980s
  • Founding Member and Former Director of the Maine Sustainable Agriculture Society
  • Member of the Farms for the Future Program Initial Review Panel

“Based on lots of research, Mr. Brown and Philip Trostel, an economics professor at UMaine’s Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center and School of Economics, believe they have solved the chicken and egg dilemma when it comes to education and economic development. States with a higher percentage of college grads have jobs that pay higher salaries. And there is clear evidence, they say, that college-educated workers come first.”

Graduate Student, Sarah Larochelle, was awarded 2nd place in the Social Sciences and Humanities Division of the 2008 Graduate Student Research Expo for her poster on the Effects of Micro-businesses on U.S. Regional Economic Growth.

Special congratulations to Robb Freeman (Ph.D. Program, Ecology and  Environmental Sciences) – Robb’s paper “A Multi-disciplinary Approach to   Modeling the Impacts of Land-Use Change on Vernal Pool-Breeding Amphibians” was selected as the oustanding student paper at the Transatlantic Land Use Conference held September 24-26, 2007 in Washington, DC.
