Academics - Optional Concentrations

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

Optional Course Concentrations:  Total of 15 credits for each concentration.  A grade of C must be achieved in SOC 201, and the grades for all 15 credits must average a C.

Crime, Law, and Deviance 

Required courses:

SOC 201 - Social Inequality
SOC 214 - Crime and Criminal Justice
SOC 220  - Deviance and Social Control
SOC 314 – Law and Society

Elective courses – At least one of the following must be taken to complete the concentration:

SOC 208 – Problems of Violence and Terrorism
SOC 337 – Sociology of Mental Illness

Race, Class, and Gender

Required courses:

SOC 201 – Social Inequality
SOC 329 – Sociology of Gender
FAS 101 or NAS 101
Elective courses – At least two of the following electives must be taken to complete the concentration; at least one of the two electives must be a Sociology course:

SOC 330 – Perspectives on Women
SOC 340 – Wealth, Poverty and Power
SOC 371  - Immigration, Women and Society
FAS 101  - Introduction to Franco-American Studies
NAS 101  - Introduction to Native American Studies
WST 101 - Introduction to Women’s Studies
WST 103 – Introduction to LBGT Studies

Note: FAS 101 or NAS 101 can not be counted as an elective if counted as a required course.
