Programs - Graduate Program of Study Options

Full-Time, Regular Program of Study Option
The Full-time MSW program of study option consists of 63 semester credit hours.  Full-time students complete the program in two years. Foundation year courses are scheduled at the UM School of Social Work on Monday and Tuesday, and all advanced year courses are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday. Courses are sequential, and most required courses are offered once a year during the day. All foundation courses must be completed before students begin the advanced year. Full-time students are only admitted in the Fall of each year.  Sample Plan of Study – Two Year Option

Extended, Regular Program of Study Option
Students who are employed or have other extensive commitments are encouraged to consider the Extended MSW program of study option. The Extended program of study option consists of 63 semester credit hours.  Students complete the program in three or four years. Classes are scheduled at the UM School of Social Work one-day per week. Part-time students are only admitted in the Fall of each year. Part-time students must complete all requirements within four years of admission to the MSW program. Extended program of study students are eligible for financial aid programs if they enroll in at least 6 credits. Sample Plan of Study: 4 year Extended Option  Sample Plan of Study- 4 year Option

Advanced Standing Option
Advanced standing in the MSW program is awarded to students who have earned a BSW degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program, have met the advanced standing admission criteria described in the admissions materials, and are recommended for advanced standing by the Admissions Committee. Applicants accepted with advanced standing status are required to attend six weeks of summer courses that provide new content and serve as a “bridge” to the advanced year of the MSW program. Daytime classes are offered during June and early July. Advanced standing students are admitted into the MSW program for June of each year. The Advanced Standing program consists of 45 credit hours.  Applicants may apply to complete the program full-time over one year or extended over two-years.

Weekend Option – Hutchinson Center
The Weekend MSW program option is offered at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast, Maine. This option is designed for students interested in a convenient, part-time, weekend format. In general, students complete two or three classes per semester on Friday nights and Saturday mornings over three years, including summers. The Hutchinson Center, a new state of the art facility of the University of Maine, (www.hutchinsoncenter.umaine.edu ) offers a variety of community education and outreach programs geared toward the interests and needs of Maine’s mid-coast citizens.  The Center is located one hour south of the University of Maine’s campus in Orono. Weekend Option – Distance Program

Every three years, the Weekend MSW program option is offered by videoconferencing to three locations in Maine.  For Fall 2012, this program will be offered in Belfast (at the Hutchinson Center), at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and at the University of Maine Outreach Center in Falmouth.  Instructors rotate throughout the three sites.  The next Weekend MSW Distance Option is anticipated to begin in September 2015.  Sample Plan of Study Weekend Distance Option
