Cultural Groups Under SHAC

African Student Association (AfSA)

The purposes of this organization are to provide unity among all Africans of Maine, to provide support for the African and African-heritage population of the University of Maine, and to provide opportunity for all the people of Maine to experience African culture and diversity.

Asian Student Association (ASA)

The purposes of this organization are to provide support for the Asian and Asian-American population of the University of Maine and to promote understanding and knowledge about Asian cultures for the University of Maine community.

Black Student Union (BSU)

The purposes of this organization are to provide a supportive atmosphere to all students of African descent at the University of Maine, to create a social/educational interaction amongst the diverse Black community and other communities at the University of Maine, and to create a cultural exchange within the University of Maine.

Capoeira Club

The object of the club shall be to study, share knowledge, and practice the elements of capoeira, including, but not limited, to the history, philosophy, music, and movements of capoeira.

Latin American Student Organization (LASO)

The purposes of this organization are to bring together and unify the Latino student population at the University of Maine and surrounding communities, to allow people of non-Latino heritage to join together with Latinos to celebrate as well as learn and appreciate the culture, and to identify the needs of its members and address and provide for those needs.  The group strives to reach out and connect with persons among the student body, faculty, staff, and in the local surrounding communities.

Muslim Students Association (MSA)

The goal of the MSA at the University of Maine is to promote a greater understanding of Islam based upon the Holy Quran to all residents and students in Orono, Maine. The MSA hopes to educate everyone on the racist stereotypes of Islam and Muslims in America. We hope to increase awareness of Islam and strive to educate others on the misconceptions regarding Islam and Islamic way of life. We want to create a safe and unified environment where everyone is welcome to learn, understand, appreciate, and practice Islam without compromising their beliefs and morals. We hope that with our efforts, we will foster better relations within our community and clear the misconceptions that are perpetuated.

Spanish Language Club

The purposes of this organization are to improve confidence and knowledge about the Spanish culture and language.
