Computer Policy

In the School of Engineering Technology, our undergraduates benefit from being part of a technology-enhanced learning community. Our faculty have trained on innovative software packages and introduce them to students as part of their classes. Students then have the capability to use those packages on their personal computers during or outside of class. All students entering the School of Engineering Technology will be required to have a notebook computer that meets our hardware and software requirements. You may purchase your notebook from your preferred vendor or you may choose to take advantage of our negotiated packages through the University of Maine Computer Connection. We’re excited to offer you this flexibility. In turn, it’s your responsibility to select a unit that meets or exceeds the following system specifications.

Additional notes for CMT and SVT students (Autodesk software)

Although there is a MacOS version of AutoCad, there are no MacOS versions of Revit or Navisworks.  Dual-booting a Mac with Windows may work, but is considerably more complicated to set up.   Check the System requirements for Autodesk Revit 2015 products at the following link for more information. There’s also a link to a Mac FAQ at the bottom of the page.  (you can type in the link or search the bold text) http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-Autodesk-Revit-2015-products.html.

It’s best to check compatibility with the Autodesk Certified Hardware tool.  (you can type in the link or search the bold text)  http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=16318527

You can check complete systems and graphics cards.  The most important part is the graphics card.

Search based on:              Autodesk Revit,  2015 or later version, Windows 8 64-bit

Additional notes for MET students (SURFCAM and SolidEdge software)

SURFCAM is not supported to run on any Mac system. Windows 8 Home or Windows 8 RT are NOT supported. The current version (2014 R1) of SURFCAM will run on either the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows 7 or 8, but the next version of SURFCAM (2015 R1) will only run on the 64-bit versions of Windows.

While the 32-bit version of windows is currently supported by SURFCAM, it will no longer be supported after the current version, so I’ve not included the 32-bit versions of Windows under the minimum requirements.

Integrated graphics cards are not recommended for either SURFCAM or Solid Edge. NVIDIA graphics cards are recommended over ATI graphics card per SURFCAM’s recommendations.

Solid Edge system requirements: http://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/en_us/products/velocity/solidedge/overview/system_requirements.shtml

Additional notes for EET students (Multisim and MatLab)

Multisim and MatLab will be required during the program.  Both programs have student versions that may be purchased online.  They will operate on systems meeting the bare minimum system requirements.
