Background and Further Details

Funded by a grant from the University of Maine System, a major goal of course section 2 is to incorporate “best methods” for the teaching and learning of introductory computer programming. Students from across all majors are encouraged to enroll. Enrolled students will be engaged in collaborative, inquiry-driven, problem-solving challenges that matter to them. Students learn on their own and with teammates working through online tutorials with instructor and student mentor support.

The online tutorials prepare you to complete small group projects that are due approximately every two weeks. You have substantial leeway to choose your own projects within broad parameters specified for each assignment. There are no exams. Each project assignment has a well-defined grading rubric so you know when you have accomplished enough work to achieve each level of grade thereby providing you with time and freedom to explore further concepts on your own. The course fulfills the UMaine General Education Requirement for Mathematics.

Because the course uses non-traditional learning approaches, we are looking for a diverse cross section of college students from wide-ranging majors at different academic levels who have had little to no exposure to programming in their past. The class will have equal numbers of women and men. While not required, student access to a laptop computer will provide greater flexibility in completing online exercises.
