Guide to Campus Living - Moving In/Checking Out
Moving in:
First-Year Students
- Welcome Class of 2016!
- Move-in day (Maine Hello) for all first-year students is Friday, August 31st, 2012
- A mailing will arrive from the university in early August, which will include more information about Maine Hello
- Please follow the directions provided in this mailing in regards to your arrival time, and from which direction you should approach campus (in order to help keep traffic at a minimum throughout the day and in each area of campus)
- Please label all boxes, bags and belongings with your last name, hall and room number
- If you are unsure of your housing assignment, please contact Housing Services at 207-581-4580 prior to your arrival
- Volunteers will be on hand to direct traffic so that you get to the correct building
Upper-Class Students
- Upper-class student may begin moving into their residence halls on Monday, September 3rd at 10:00am

What to bring for your room:
- A cart, hand-truck or dolly for moving larger items into the hall
- Bedding (mattress pad, comforter, pillow, sheets, etc.) for a twin bed that is 80’’ long (usually labeled Twin XL)
- Crates, closest organizers, or under-the-bed organizers
- Toiletries
- Towels
- Shower shoes (flip flops work great!)
- Shower caddy (to carry your toiletries to and from the bathroom)
- Laundry hamper
- Laundry detergent and dryer sheets or softener (all residential students receive $25 in laundry funds per semester on their MaineCard- this is equivalent to 10 washes and dries)
- A power strip that is also a surge protector (for your computer or other electronic equipment)
- Permitted electronic equipment, such as a stereo, TV, video game equipment, computer, etc.
- Alarm clock
- First Aid kit for personal use
- Small kitchen items (plates, cups, bowls)
- Decorations (please see our Fire Safety Regulations section)
- UL-certified fans
- Up to a 10-gallon fish tank if bringing fish (this is the only permitted pet)
- Desk lamp (without a halogen bulb)
- A coffee maker with an automatic shut-off (units without an automatic shut-off pose a fire risk and are not permitted)
- A bike and bike lock
- Phone cord if you are bringing a land-line phone to hook-up
- Ethernet cord
- Cable cord
What to discuss sharing with your roommate:
- Carpet or rug (room dimensions may be found on each hall’s page)
- Television, DVD player or other electronics
- Land-line telephone
- Microfridge unit or small refrigerator (4 cubic feet or smaller)
What we provide:
For every student we provide:
- A bed and mattress (mattresses are 80″ long and will need Twin XL bedding, which can be purchased at many stores)
- A desk and desk chair
- A bureau/dresser
- A closet unit, typically with a bar and hooks
- Bookshelves (usually built-in)
- Ethernet/internet hook-up
For each room we provide:
- A trashcan and recycling bin
- Blinds for the window
- Land-line phone hook-up (we do not provide phones or cords)
- Cable hook-up (we do not provide cable cords)
- We also have wireless in all residence halls and most academic buildings
- Smoke detectors and sprinkler system
Other amenities:
- All residential rooms have a corresponding mailbox in the main lobby of their building
- At each front desk students can check out items such as vacuums, brooms, trashbags, board games, snow shovels, etc.
- Most buildings will also have all of the following: laundry rooms with washers and dryers, study lounges (on most floors), a public TV lounge, gaming items (pool tables, ping pong tables), a recycling room, bike racks (outside) and bike rooms (inside)

What NOT to bring for your room — Prohibited items:
The items on this list are prohibited in order to maintain the safety of all persons who are living in our residence halls. Additionally, students should not bring any items that may create community concerns, such as loud speakers.
- Amplifiers (may be stored in student rooms, but we do not provide any space on campus where amplifiers may be used)
- Large speakers, subwoofers or other sound equipment that may cause significant noise issues for other community members
- Halogen lamps or “octopus lamps” (lamps with multiple, bendable arms)
- Neon signs
- Toasters, toaster ovens, George Forman grills, electric frying pans, etc. (these items are only allowed in DTAV/Patch)
- Any other appliance with an open flame, open coil or exposed hot plate
- Stand-alone microwaves (you may purchase a microfridge unit with an attached microwave)
- Grills, charcoal, lighter fluid, fireworks, firecrackers, sparklers, gasoline or other flammable items
- Candles, incense, candle warmers, etc. (we do permit plug-in air fresheners)
- Space heaters, air conditioners, etc.
- Non-university provided lofts, water beds, or any furniture that would need to be bolted into the walls (including TVs that need to be bolted into the wall)
- Any pets or animals (other than fish, which are limited to a 10-gallon tank)
- A gas-powered bike or moped that you wish to bring into or store in the building (may only be stored outside)
- Any tobacco products, smokeless tobacco, cigars, pipes, hookahs or other items that will create smoke or may be used to smoke as we are a smoke-free, tobacco-free campus.
- Weapons of any sort, including, but not limited to, guns, ammunition, air soft guns, bb guns, paintball guns, hunting knives, bows and arrows, bow staffs, nunchucks, other martial arts weapons, etc. Weapons may be stored at UMPD’s building on campus, but may not be stored in the residence halls, academic buildings, on a student’s person, or in a vehicle while on campus.

If you decide to leave the university mid-year:
(1) Notify a ResLife staff member that you are checking out of your room
(2) Remove all belongings from the room
(3) Clean and arrange your side of the room neatly so it is ready for a new occupant
(4) Meet your RA, ACC or CC for your check-out appointment
(5) Change your mailing address directly with friends, family and any businesses that you regularly receive mail from
* Please note that failure to check-out correctly (as noted above) will result in fees charged to the student’s account for. These fees vary and will be assessed for any of the following reasons: improper check-out, key replacement, removal of personal belongings (per-hour charge), disposal of property (per-hour charge) and/or cleaning (per-hour charge).

Check-out procedures at the end of a semester or at the end of the academic year:
- In December, with the exception of students who live in continuous housing halls (Penobscot, Knox and DTAV/Patch), all students are expected to vacate their residence hall within 24 hours of their last exam or by 5:00 p.m. on the last day of exams, whichever comes first. The academic calendar can be found here.
- In December, students in continuous housing halls who are not returning to UMaine for the spring semester must check-out of their room within 24 hours after the last exam or by 5:00 p.m. on the last day of exams, whichever comes first.
- At the end of the academic year students may register and be approved to remain for graduation if they are graduating or if they have been asked to participate in graduate by a university department. The sponsoring university department must contact Housing Services (581-4580) in order to have their sponsored students approved to stay for graduation.
- Residential students who wish to remain in on-campus housing for summer term should refer to “Summer Housing” for more information about this process.
To check-out of your room (either because you are not returning the following semester, or at the end of the academic year):
(1) Make a check-out appointment with a ResLife staff member, or sign-up in advance for Express Check-Out (end of the year only)
(2) Remove all belongings from your room
(3) Clean and arrange your side of the room neatly so it is ready for a new occupant
(4) Meet your RA, ACC or CC for your check-out appointment, or sign your Express Check-Out card/envelope and place it securely in your mailbox
(5) Change your mailing address directly with friends, family and any businesses that you regularly receive mail from
