How to Become a Resident Assistant/Community Assistant

Resident Assistants (RAs) and Community Assistants (CAs) fill an important role in creating a welcoming, fun, safe and respectful community within each residence hall on our campus. Each RA/CA is tasked with getting to know each resident on their floor, while also creating a community feel on the floor by helping residents get to know one another. Successful RA/CAs frequently connect with each of their residents in person. RA/CAs also plan and run creative events in their hall to help residents get to know one another. RA/CAs should be good role models to their communities, both personally and academically. We train our staff to know about resources all over campus so that they can help answer questions that residents may have. At times RA/CAs will also be called upon to mediate conflict, to confront behavioral concerns, and to respond to crises.

All eligible applicants must:

  • Have at least two semesters of experience of living on a college/university campus (or similar experience) by the first date of employment. (Note: this means first semester first-year students are eligible to apply for the following academic year).
  • At least a 2.5 GPA cumulatively, as well as a 2.5 GPA per semester while employed in the position.
  • Be in good behavioral standing with the university.
