2010 Initiative to Support the Use of High End Instrumentation (HEIR)

Objective:

To create a program that facilitates collection of preliminary data and proof of concept for pilot projects in emerging areas of science and engineering by providing access to high performance instrumentation available at the University of Maine. Preliminary findings will support preparation of competitive and relevant external funding applications to NSF, NIH, EPA, DOD and other agencies.

Overview:

This MEIF funded grant program was created by the office of the VP for Research in Spring 2010 to support collective use of critical instrumentation at UM. The high end instrument review (HEIR) committee of the University Research Council participated in selecting and recommending high quality/high impact proposals to the provost. The PI(s) and co-PI(s) or the Department/Center housing the instrument are responsible for the collaborative research needed to acquire data for subsequent proposal submission to major federal agencies. The 15 proposals submitted in response to the 2010 HEIR RFP represented MEIF-eligible research from multiple disciplines and four UMaine colleges. The  proposals selected for full or partial funding span a wide range of MEIF priorities and are summarized below. A total of $25,000 was awarded.

This is an ongoing program.
