Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB) - Required Training

ALL personnel named in an existing or new “Application for Approval of Research with Human Subjects” must complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) web-based training on the protection of human subjects (this includes faculty sponsors on student studies).

The CITI training is valid for four years from the date of completion. After four years, the “refresher” modules will need to be completed (you will receive a reminder from CITI).

It is estimated that the training will take 2 hours. Passing score for quizzes is 80%. The components of the CITI training include:

Conflicts of Interest in Research Involving Human Subjects
International Research
Internet Research
Research with Children
Research with Prisoners
Research in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools (we recognize the heading states “Public,” but please take this module if your research is conducted in private elementary/secondary schools)

NEW USER Instructions for Accessing Training (SUGGESTION: print instructions before going to the CITI site):

Be sure to log back into your existing CITI account (!  Do not create a new account.  You may have an account created for a different compliance requirement (e.g., animal care, conflict of interest).  If you have forgotten your username, contact the IRB office at 1-1498.  If you create a new account, you will not get the refresher course, but the one for first time users.  Once you are logged in, click on “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups.”  This brings you to the list of possible courses to choose from.
