Scientists and technologists work in collaboration with engineers to invent, design, construct, and maintain the systems that convert one form of energy into another, more useful form of energy. This includes new technologies that convert biomass into liquid fuels or generate electricity from wind, as well as traditional technologies related to fossil fuels. Scientists strive to convert energy as cost effectively as possible with the smallest feasible environmental footprint, including reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases.
Students will focus on numerous aspects of energy generation and use, including the broader climatic implications of energy decisions. This degree is rooted in science and technology focusing on diverse subject matter including efficiency, distribution, and life cycle analysis, among other topics. Students also study important economic and policy issues pertaining to energy.
EET 498 Renewable Energy and Electricity Production
Topics include: basic circuit components, load specification, history of electric utilities, distributed generation, the economics of energy, wind generation, and solar generation.
SFR 455 Bioenergy Sources, Systems, and Environmental Effects
The purpose of this course is to detail the use of biomass for bioenergy use worldwide and providing a review of the biomass sources, definitions, thermodynamics, common measures, equipment are discussed. Environmental problems and benefits associated with biomass are also detailed along with legislative incentives in the United States.

CHE 498 Combustion and Fuel Processing
The aim of the course is to provide the scientific and practical background for the operation of combustion systems and for combustion gas pollution abatement. New developments as a result of the availability of new biofuels and combustion technologies will be outlined. Conversion of fossil fuels and biomass into heat, steam, power, transportation fuels, and chemicals will be described with emphasis on mass and energy balances.
MEE/CIE 480 Wind Energy Engineering
This course presents the theory and design of modern wind turbines. Theoretical aspects of the course cover the fundamentals of assessing the aerodynamic loads and efficiency of a wind turbine. Design procedures for wind turbines are outlined with an emphasis on maximizing performance, assuring structural integrity and minimizing the cost of energy. Current trends in offshore wind are also covered as well as the social and environmental issues of a burgeoning wind energy industry.
