Dear Registered ESL Summer Academy Participants:
Welcome! We are looking forward to meeting and working with you during our time together in June. Please read this letter immediately as it provides information you will need to act on in order to participate fully in the Academy.
The Academy “Focus on Classrooms: English language development (ELD) standards in Action-Lesson planning and analyzing data for classroom decision-making.” This three-day interactive and differentiated academy provides an in-depth opportunity to apply the ELD Standards to classroom instruction. Participants will explore the purpose and process of transforming the model performance indicators (MPIs) and apply these ideas to their specific educational settings.

In addition, participants will be introduced to a data analysis process to apply to their own classroom data in order to gain more experience analyzing data for classroom decision-making from a language lens. Academy materials will be provided to you the first morning of the Academy.

Location, Date, and Time of Academy: The three‐day Academy will meet on June 24-26, 2014 from 8:30am to 3:30pm, with a lunch break provided each day in the McIntire Room of Buchanan Alumni House at the University of Maine. Buchanan Alumni House is located at 160 College Ave in Orono, Maine. The Buchanan Alumni House’s McIntire Room is air conditioned so we encourage you to bring a light sweater or additional layers with you. The meeting room is approximately a 15‐minute walk from provided housing.

Cancellation Policy: Full refunds will be provided with written notice of cancellation received no later than June 9, 2014. No refunds will be provided for cancellations received on or after June 10, 2014. Please contact Carla McPherson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Housing: The University of Maine lodging for June 23 through June 25 will be in Patch Residence Hall. Each suite has three or four single bedrooms with a shared kitchen (with a refrigerator and stove), living room and one bathroom (with toilet, shower stall, sink, electrical outlets, and mirror). Bedrooms are furnished with twin beds, bureaus, desks and chairs. All beds are made with sheets, blankets, and pillows. Towels are provided and can be changed daily. Participants need to supply their own personal hygiene items. Patch Residence Hall is not air conditioned so you may wish to bring a small portable fan. For kitchen use, you will need to provide your own cooking utensils, dinnerware and clean‐up supplies. You will be responsible for kitchen clean up. See the “You May Consider Bringing” box below for additional items.
Housing Check‐In/Out: You must check‐in in order to receive a MaineCard, which will allow you to enter Patch Residence Hall, your suite and single bedroom, and is needed for breakfast and dinner at the Hilltop Commons. Check in and out for Patch Residence Hall will take place in the Doris Twitchell Allen Village (DTAV) Community Center (see campus map). Check‐in times are Monday (6/23) 5:00pm to 8:00pm and Tuesday (6/24) 7:00am to 8:00am. Please indicate when you will check-in by clicking here. Check‐out times are Thursday (6/26) 7:00am to 8:00am and 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
Non-housing Participants: Those individuals finding their own off campus lodging are required to register at the Buchanan Alumni House at 8:00am on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. You will receive a MaineCard, which is needed for breakfast and dinner at the Hilltop Commons. No breakfast will be provided to you on Tuesday, June 24th but you will have Tuesday (lunch and dinner), Wednesday (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and Thursday (breakfast and lunch).

Parking: Parking on the Orono campus is closely monitored and visitors’ cars must have the required permit. To avoid hefty fines, be sure to print this parking permit, display on front right corner of dash, and park in Commuter (Black) Parking Lots (see campus map). Be sure to read the rules and regulations on your parking permit carefully, as they apply to everyone utilizing roadways and parking lots at the University of Maine. The parking lots are not adjacent to Patch Residence Hall, so you may want to consider a roller board for ease of moving luggage.
Meals: The Academy will provide the following meals – Tuesday (breakfast, lunch and dinner), Wednesday (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and Thursday (breakfast and lunch). Lunch will be catered in the Buchanan Alumni House with a water station available all day. Limited snacks will be provided mid‐morning and mid‐afternoon. Breakfasts and dinners are provided at Hilltop Commons, which is cafeteria style with a varied menu and located near Patch Residence Hall. Be sure to bring your MaineCard (see housing check‐in above). The hours of operation are 7:00‐8:30am for breakfast and 5:00‐6:30pm for dinner. The only meal not provided by the Academy during your stay is Monday (6/23) night’s dinner. You may use the kitchen in your suite (see housing section, above), or there are restaurants in the greater Orono area (see dining guide athttp://umaine.edu/conferences/dining-services/). The MarketPlace in the Memorial Union will be open from 7:00am to 3:00pm and offers a wide range of options. Purchases at the MarketPlace are not included in the Academy fee, but the MarketPlace is available to participants who may want to purchase additional food.
Wireless Internet Access: The University of Maine takes copyright violations very seriously. We request that you disable all file sharing programs (e.g. Limewire, BitTorrent, eDonkey, etc.) while on our network. Most file sharing programs run in the background and must be manually disabled. If you experience any issues with your connection or need assistance disabling your file sharing, you may go to 17 Shibles Hall (basement) or contact our IT Help Center at 581-2506 during regular business hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm on Monday through Friday. Instructions to Connect: If using a PC, go to wireless icon in lower right corner and choose “view available wireless networks” and select “UMS-Guest”. If using a MAC, click on wireless access icon in upper right corner and select “UMS-Guest”. Open browser. Firefox works best as a first choice. You will be given a page that asks for your email address. Enter your email address and click Accept. The system will now allow you to get online. After hours connectivity problems: If using a PC, right-click on the network icon on the lower right corner and select “diagnose and repair.” The computer should then offer options to help fix the connection. If using a MAC, click on wireless access icon in upper right corner. Select “tempest” then turn off the “airport” then turn it back on.
Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Information: CEU application and instructions will be distributed with the Academy materials. You will need to complete the biographical information on the application and have a sponsor (Project Reach, ESL Programs Staff, or Presenter) sign to verify your attendance and participation. The completed form along with a $10.00 processing fee must be submitted to UMaine Conference Services. The CEU processing fee is not included in the Academy fee. The three‐day residential Academy will provide 2.1 CEUs equaling roughly 1.4 recertification credits.
Certificate of Attendance: Certificate of Attendance will be distributed with the Academy materials at the summer academy.
Tobacco-Free Policy: The University of Maine is a tobacco-free campus and this policy applies visitors. The use of tobacco is not permitted on any university-owned property, which includes but is not limited to, buildings, university grounds, parking areas, walkways, recreational and sporting facilities and university-owned vehicles. Student Recreation and Fitness Center (SRFC): SRFC has cardio and weight equipment, a pool area, hot tub, co‐ed sauna, and athletic courts. The Summer Hours are Monday – Friday 5:00am to 8:00pm. The pool opens 1 hour after SRFC, and closes 1 hour before SRFC. Adult day passes are $7, which grants full access to the facility and all no‐charge group fitness classes. The SRFC day pass fee is not included in the Academy fee. All day pass users will be issued a receipt in order to enter the facilities multiple times on the date of purchase. Please note all day pass users must present a photo ID in order to enter the facility and must sign the Liability Waiver. For more information, please visit http://umaine.edu/campusrecreation/.
University of Maine Attractions: UMaine has a number of attractions such as botanical gardens, planetarium, ornamental trail garden, and University forest trails.
