Professional Development - School Districts

Each year, new districts in Maine acquire English Language Learners (ELLs), posing challenges to districts unfamiliar with identification, assessment, methodologies, and strategies for serving this growing population. Currently, Maine has over 4,600 ELLs in the state who speak over 100 languages. These students are dispersed throughout the state with larger populations in the Portland, Lewiston-Auburn and traditionally French and Native American speaking areas. Project Reach assists administrators and educators to support their ELLs as well as provide informational resources, conferences and networking opportunities, and provides access to an English as a Second Language/Bilingual Education lending library. Project Reach also offers professional quality training workshops related to multicultural education, heritage language classroom approaches, ESL, and second language content instruction in addition to test preparation workshops for the Praxis II exam.  Professional Development for in-service teachers include English as a Second Language endorsement courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Courses and workshops qualify for Contact Hours to help professionals maintain their certification.

Ms. Margie MacDonald serves as the Outreach Coordinator for Project Reach.  In her capacity as Outreach Coordinator, she consults with and presents workshops on language and culture, ACCESS, ESL strategies, etc, in partnering districts and other districts upon request.  Requests for her services can be made through the Project Reach office or contact her directly at mmacdonaldconsulting@gmail.com or 207-671-1164.
