Professional Development - 2013 Summer Academy
2013 Summer Academy - A three-day residential academy for teachers and administrators
Linking Language and Learning: Integrating WIDA ELD Standards with Content Standards
June 25-27, 2013 at the University of Maine’s Wells Conference Center in Orono
In this three day interactive and differentiated academy, participants will have opportunities to work collaboratively to explore the language demands of the Common Core Standards (CCSS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participants will work together to integrate content and language standards to develop a custom design for instruction of ELLs that is comprehensible, challenging and grounded in academic language development. Participants will create materials using the three sets of standards. Although not a requirement, participants may bring lessons or units that they have created prior to the academy for feedback and development.

Melissa Paton’s fifteen years of teaching experience have been devoted to working solely with students with diverse linguistic backgrounds and to helping all teachers build their capacity for developing students’ language acquisition. Her fifteen years of teaching experience have been devoted to working solely with students with diverse linguistic backgrounds and to helping all teachers build their capacity for developing students’ language acquisition. Her interest stems from an upbringing in a multi-lingual home where she developed an interest in language, culture and social justice at an early age. Melissa holds degrees from UC San Diego and Edgewood College in Literature, English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education. She is a professed math geek and enjoys working with general education teachers in particular to address differentiation and scaffolding for language growth within content areas.
