Located in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, Central China Normal University (CCNU), which was founded in 1903, is a key comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. As one of the universities on the list of 211 National Education Priority Project and 985 National Project Innovation Platform, Central China Normal University is recognized as one of the universities implementing “Plan 111” and “Recruitment Program of Global Experts”. Central China Normal University has established 27 schools, including School of Foreign Languages, School of Literature, School of Music, School of Fine Arts, School of Physics, School of Life Sciences and so on, and over 60 research centers & institutes. CCNU has established academic relationships and research cooperation with over 100 universities and research institutes in over 70 countries and regions, including the USA, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Korea, Vietnam, etc.
CCNU, attaching great importance to international development, invites a large number of professors and scholars from abroad. School of Foreign Languages, the primary employer of foreign experts of languages, every year employs about 10 English teachers in the English Department, Translation Department and College English Department. Many courses, including audio-visual course, oral language course, intensive reading course, writing course, have been set to develop students’ basic language skills in aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing. College of Psychology, College of Politics and Law, School of History and Culture and School of Economics and Management, and many others to come also recruit foreign teachers and experts, who are responsible for academic English language teaching and other professional courses.
Every school year, there are about 40 international experts and teachers teaching and doing academic research at CCNU, apart from over 200 short-time visiting scholars. Here they enjoy picturesque views on the campus, which is nestled on a hill. A new foreign expert apartment building with complete facilities and furniture has been built in 2009 on campus and is now taken care of by a professional property company to provide a comfortable living environment to foreign experts and teachers.
The city of Wuhan, a well-known central China city, lies on the Yangtze River and is a transportation hub of China. It has what other big Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai have to offer but with a much smaller population. Residents here enjoy pleasant climate and beautiful natural environment but with a much lower cost of living than in many other big Chinese cities.

From September 1 to June 30 of the following year (the probationary period is one month, starting from September 1 to October 1.) and may renew employment contract based on the two parties’ consent. The new foreign teachers should arrive at CCNU before September 1st of every year with the Z visa (work visa) on their passports.
Work conditions and benefits:
Salary: RMB 4500-RMB 6000 per month (about $738-984) paid monthly
Other benefits: CCNU provides a two-room apartment (with furniture, bedding, telephone, refrigerator, kitchen, bathroom and air conditioner). The university buys hospitalization medical service insurance for teachers and covers transportation between Wuhan and the teacher’s home city and buys a return ticket every year if employment contract is renewed. Teachers will also receive a vacation allowance of 2200 RMB after accomplishing one year’s teaching assignment.

English Language Learner(ELL) & Special Learning Disability(SLD): A Complicated Relationship
As Maine’s ELL population continues to develop and spread beyond the greater Portland and Lewiston-Auburn areas, an increasing number of school psychologists and special educators are encountering the myriad of challenges and limitations to accurately/ethically determine whether ELL students meet Maine SLD eligibility criteria.
Opportunity to earn quick money over a 6 to 8 week period starting in May/June 2014 for about 2 to 2.5 hours a day 4 times a week. Training will likely be in the later afternoons but the schedule is still open for discussion.
We are looking for an individual who is experienced in teaching English to English Second Language speakers and has course content available to use. This is an opportunity for someone who is able to teach English as a second language in a class setting. We have a number of customers who want this type of training and are ideally looking to bring someone on board to do this on a contract basis as these class needs arise. It would also be okay if this is a once-off training project for the trainer. This is a good opportunity for an experienced English second language teacher who wants to earn extra money when the opportunity arises. Training will be on-site at our clients’ locations and the initial customer is in Abington. The person does need to be able to arrange their own transportation. “Focus on Classrooms: English language development (ELD) standards in Action-
Lesson planning and analyzing data for classroom decision-making.”
This three-day interactive and differentiated academy provides an in-depth opportunity to apply the ELD Standards to classroom instruction. Participants will explore the purpose and process of transforming the model performance indicators (MPIs) and apply these ideas to their specific educational settings.
Participants will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of lesson planning for content and language development
- Create effective student profiles for language instruction
- Transform MPIs to reflect specific instructional settings
- Identify language goals for instruction and assessment
In addition, participants will be introduced to a data analysis process to apply to their own classroom data in order to gain more experience analyzing data for classroom decision-making from a language lens.

This Fall, on Mondays, John Maddaus is offering an elective field experience course in Urban and Rural Education: EDG 425. (See flier)
The course features field trips to a variety of schools with diverse student populations: English Language Learners, including both immigrants and international students; students of different racial, ethnic and nationality backgrounds; students from low-income families; and of course, students in urban and rural schools. The goals of the field experience are: (1) to explore ways in which students’ social and cultural backgrounds and community contexts affect teaching and learning, and (2) to consider how to be an effective teacher with students of different backgrounds and in a variety of types of communities.
Most of the field trips are to schools within an hour’s drive of campus. In the past, the course visited John Bapst High School and Penobscot Job Corps in Bangor, Viola Rand School in Bradley, Indian Island School of the Penobscot Indian Nation, Penobscot Valley High School and Hichborn Middle School in Howland, and Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft. John anticipates visiting most of these schools this Fall – leaving campus at 8am, and returning by 12noon. Transportation is provided for those who prefer to travel in university vehicles.
In addition, there are two longer trips offered, and students can participate in either the urban trip and/or the rural trip. In the past, the urban trip was the Park Avenue Elementary School in Auburn, followed by a visit to the Tree Street Youth after-school program in Lewiston. The rural trip is going to be new possibly to Calais High School and Middle School, or Cobscook Community Learning Center (alternative schools program), both in Washington County in easternmost Maine. When on a longer trip, lunch and dinner are included – leaving at 7am and returning by 8pm. For students with Monday afternoon classes, John contacts the course instructors of the afternoon classes and arrange for the students to be excused from class for that day.
In addition to these field trips, they will be some guest speakers for classes here on campus. These classes will be 9am-12noon. The speakers will include someone from Project Reach on teaching ESL, one on an urban-rural exchange program called Operation Breaking Stereotypes, and one on rural education.

Our goal is to leverage fast growing mobile networks to provide “book abundance” for families everywhere who wish to promote literacy in their homes and schools. The books may be enjoyed on computers, tablets and most smartphones. There is nothing to buy. Thanks to sponsors, this is a free service for anyone, worldwide that has Internet access.
Our books were created for home use by parents (and teachers) of preschool and primary children and by ELL teachers and their students and ELL families with preschool children. Second language students will also enjoy them of course. Our first books are 100 simple picture books for read-alouds and for the youngest / newest readers. Written in English and narrated (on demand) in English and in 15 other world and indigenous languages, we are reaching out to nearly 3 billion potential readers and their families.
In collaboration with cultural institutions in the US we are adding new books with rich content and new languages every month. Eventually our books will be written in many languages as well.
You are invited to visit and enjoy the library and of course to share it with your children, friends, colleagues and students. Feedback from LRA colleagues will be deeply appreciated.
