May 14th, 2013 12:23 PM

Term-funded Instructor or Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education in a U.S. Department of Education, Alaska Native Education sponsored, three-year program.

Background: Math in a Cultural Context (MCC) is a long-term, collaborative, innovative and successful project developing and implementing culturally-based supplemental curriculum to improve elementary school-aged students’ math performance, particularly Alaskan Native students. MCC is one of the few culturally based programs that uses rigorous research methods that have consistently shown the program to be effective. Our latest work provides an exciting opportunity to develop a ‘measuring approach’, based in part on Indigenous Knowledge, for the teaching and learning of elementary school mathematics. This position presents ample opportunities for both publishing and working with Indigenous educators and communities.

Qualifications: Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Math Education or closely related field with emphasis in elementary school mathematics, curriculum development, or research in elementary school math required.

Responsibilities: As part of a collaborative team, a primary responsibility is developing a supplemental elementary school curriculum concentrating on a measuring approach to the teaching of numbers (particularly fractions and ratios), early algebra, and geometry. The iterative development process includes field-testing, refining, and assessing. Another primary responsibility is to design and develop professional development materials and conduct professional development workshops. Research responsibilities will initially focus on the iterative development process and qualitative research; while mixed methods are used in the final year of the project when a small comparison group study takes place. This collaborative work occurs with long-term partners in selected Alaskan schools and communities.

Appointment: This position is a 10.5 month appointment, beginning in late spring or the summer of 2013. Salary is competitive.
