The President’s Cabinet - Julie Hopwood

Julie Hopwood has served as the Senior Advisor to the President at the University of Maine since August 2011.

A native of Idaho and raised in California’s Central Valley, Hopwood studied history and political science as an undergraduate at Boise State University.  She received the Juris Doctor degree from the University of Idaho College of Law and the Master of Science Degree in Broadcast Journalism from the Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication.  She began her academic administrative career as Special Assistant to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas advancing to the position of Assistant to the Provost for Policy and Communication at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  During this period she also earned the Master of Public Administration degree before accepting her current position at the University of Maine.

In her role as Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff at UMaine, Hopwood integrates a professional expertise in higher education law, communications, public administration, planning, and policy with university-wide  applications. With President Ferguson, she has effectively led the Blue Sky Plan, the University of Maine’s transformational strategic plan.  In this role, she has creatively coordinated the major organization and messaging of the Blue Sky Plan consistent with her leadership and restructuring of the Division of Marketing and Communications.  In addition to the diverse initiatives associated with the Blue Sky Plan and specific initiatives associated with enhanced athletics engagement strategies, her leadership has resulted in implementation of substantive  marketing and communication policies and procedures, improved messaging through news, web services, and video, as well as a successful and broad- based university branding initiative improving the image and recognition of UMaine.
