Janet Waldron serves as Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance for the University of Maine and has held this position since early 2003. She has over 30 years of experience in agency administration, financial management, information technology, capital facilities management and budgeting in highly complex organizations. In her current position, Waldron has worked to ensure strong financial, business and planning practices resulting in balanced budgets despite difficult economic circumstances and declining public support. Her UMaine responsibilities have included: overall financial management, representation on two investment committees, budget and business services, risk management, human resources to include payroll processing, Information Technology, Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety Management, Employee Assistance and Wellness, Facilities Management for 253 buildings and close to $1 billion in infrastructure and real estate, Purchasing, the Bursar’s Office, a Childcare Center, $55 million in Auxiliary Business Operations including residence halls, dining, printing/mailing operations, the bookstore, and the Collins Center for the Arts. Accomplishments include facilitating construction activities totaling approx. $200 million, engaging in energy management and conservation strategies saving millions of dollars for the campus while moving the institution towards sustainability, strengthening environmental and safety programs, advancing technology for the institution, participating as a member of the president’s cabinet and linking to various trustee and governing boards, and consistently balancing budgets with a year-end positive surplus.
Prior to joining the University of Maine,Waldron served as Commissioner of the Department of Administration and Finance for eight years. As commissioner, she was responsible for the State of Maine’s 10 billion dollar biennial budget including development, presentation, and accounting of both revenues and expenditures. Agency administration included the Bureau of Taxation, Bureau of Accounts and Control, Division of Purchases with state agency contracts in excess of $500 million, working with the State Treasurer to sell state bonds, facilities management, Information Technology, Human Resources, Benefit Administration and Collective Bargaining, Liquor and Lottery Operations. Waldron had direct administrative responsibility for over 1,200 employees and an agency budget in excess of $520 million annually. She served as the governor’s link to numerous boards and commissions including the Maine State Retirement System and Maine State Legislature.
Prior to these positions, Waldron served in a number of highly responsible positions associated with various aspects of financial and administrative management. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire, and worked toward a graduate master’s degree at Dartmouth College.
