For participants of the Applied Poultry Science professional development program.

Individual Assignment, January – February, 2012

Each applied poultry science project participant is assigned to develop some type of tool designed for use by poultry producers (eggs, meat, feathers, hatchery, etc.) or a by professional who works directly with poultry producers. The result could be a teaching aid, checklist, chart, fact sheet, guide, plan, calculator, power point presentation, video clip, spread sheet, record sheet, template, organizer, labor-saver, customer survey, online quiz, or another useful item. You are welcome and encouraged to gather information and advice from others (both in and outside this professional development group) as you develop this assignment. However, this assignment should be completed as an individual. Individuals will be given full credit for their work. Due March 31, 2012.

Case Study Assignment, January 2011

Case Study Template (Word)

Objective: The purpose of using case studies in this professional development project is to help participants become more familiar with local poultry enterprises by identifying the farm’s methods of poultry production and marketing and recognizing the farm’s strengths and limitations. These case studies will be compiled and used as a teaching tool for all participants. Do not use the name(s) of individuals, farm, markets, town or state in describing your case.

Steps:

List and describe the poultry enterprise(s) on the farm.  Include types and numbers of birds and the purpose of each poultry enterprise.  Briefly describe the production cycle for each poultry enterprise on this farm.  If appropriate, consider mentioning other enterprises on the farm and how they complement the poultry enterprise.

List the number of workers on the farm and how many are needed for the poultry enterprise.  Briefly describe the responsibilities of each poultry enterprise worker.

Describe the facilities that are used for the enterprise.  List the equipment used for the poultry enterprise.  Consider including a few photos.

Describe the feed(s) used for the poultry.  List the feeds used, how they are stored and how they are provided to the birds.

Describe how the poultry or their products are marketed.  If the operation has a marketing plan, present its outline.

Ask the farmer to identify the following (if appropriate)

Identify the short and long term goals of the farm in regards to producing and marketing poultry.

Provide a summary statement of the farmer regarding his/her poultry enterprise.


State Regulations for Selling Poultry Meat & Eggs Assignment, Fall 2010

Work cooperatively with other project participants from your state in gathering specific regulations for selling poultry products and eggs in your state.

Contact your state department of agriculture and inquire about the regulations for farmers who sell poultry meat and/or eggs. Consider framing your inquiry as if you were the producer. The information you find should be easily understood by the general public. Provide all necessary information with references if provided. Please note with whom you spoke and the telephone number of the person. If the regulations appear on the state government’s Web site, please provide the Web address.

Download and fill out the  State Regulations for Selling Poultry Meat & Eggs Assignment Form (Word). Bring your completed assignment to the first training in October 2010.


Pricing Assignment, August/September/October 2010.

Over the next 4 to 6 weeks, make 2 visits to at least two local stores or markets at which poultry meat or eggs are sold. One outlet visited ought to be for conventional foods while the other ought to feature natural or organic products for a good comparison. Include prices for eggs and poultry meat (consider whole birds as well as parts). Download and fill out the Pricing Assignment Form (Word). Bring your completed form(s) to the October 2010 training in Maine.
