2014-2015 Collaboration with the Town of Orono

Confronting the Challenges of Studentification in Residential Orono Neighborhoods

Jacob Hatch, Cameron Marcotte, Jacob Posik, Harold Stewart III, Adam Thibodeau

This year-long study was conducted in collaboration with Orono Town Planner Evan Richert and Town Manager Sophie Wilson. Students in Professor Rob Glover’s Practicum in Engaged Policy Studies worked with Richert and Wilson over the course of the year to frame the question, strategize about how to collect relevant data, execute the project and present results to the Orono Town Council, as well as distribute the report to relevant stakeholders at the University of Maine and the greater Orono area more broadly. The project examined the opportunities and challenges associated with greater numbers of “student homes” in residential Orono neighborhoods and what steps the Town of Orono and the University of Maine ought to take to ensure positive interactions and relationships between student and long-term residents. The links below will take you to research reports and presentations produced as a result of the project.
