UMaine Cooperative Extension Piscataquis County will be presenting raised bed and container gardening demonstrations throughout the gardening season for interested beginner gardeners at the Dover-Foxcroft location, 165 East Main Street.  Master Gardener Dotty Hadler and staff at UMaine Cooperative Extension Piscataquis County will demonstrate how to prepare, plant, care for, harvest, prepare and preserve vegetables grown in raised bed and container gardens.  Participants will learn how to successfully raise a sustainable raised bed and/or container garden.  Monthly sessions begin May 16th at 3:00 p.m.  Interested gardeners can sign up for one or more sessions. “Funds raised through this promotion help improve our 4-H programs and allow us to offer more programs for youth in Maine,” says Lisa Phelps, University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H Program Administrator.

This is third year of the 4-H Paper Clover Campaign, shoppers at the Dover-Foxcroft TSC store will have the opportunity to support 4-H in Piscataquis County by choosing to purchase paper clovers for a $1, $5, or more at checkout. All funds raised will be donated to 4-H, and will support 4-H youth development activities in Piscataquis County.

“Through this highly impactful community event, we have been able to raise funds nationally over the past few years for thousands of 4-H youth across the country,” says Donald Floyd Jr., president and CEO of National 4-H Council. “We are more than pleased with the success of the 4-H Paper Clover Campaign, and we are even more honored to continue the tremendous partnership that drives support for 4-H clubs and programs in the communities of more than 1,000 Tractor Supply Company and Del’s Feed and Farm Supply stores.”

The Paper Clover efforts are one of the key ways Tractor Supply Company stores can give back to the community, says John Wendler, TSC senior vice president of marketing. “We’re proud to help improve the many communities in which we have stores through our partnership with 4-H.That is what Tractor Supply is all about.”

Heritage Balloon Festival May 31-June 2.  Clubs and staff from
Piscataquis County will be doing demonstrations during the Festival.
Come and learn about raising rabbits and chickens and learn about the
exciting science of Aquaculture.  4-H Club members also have a balloon
game planned plus 4-H 100th Birthday in Maine balloons, natural dog
treats and cool ties for sale.  They are looking forward to sharing
4-H with the community.

Tractor Supply Company/Del’s stores (including Dover-Foxcroft’s
Store).   Last year the Dover-Foxcroft Store received a couple of Regional
Awards for their exemplary contribution to this great promo.  4-H is
hoping to top it this year.  Clubs & staff from the county will be on
hand during the promo to share 4-H experiences and demonstrations.
There are some exciting new features that have been added to this
spring’s promotion:

  • TSC will be offering a $5 Paper Clover available for purchase in addition to the $1 option
  • a Purina coupon will be attached to each Paper Clover
  • a new incentive program for counties to receive additional funds
  • a regional 4-H award winner, which will award $1,000 to the top performing state in each 4-H region–we’re planning on Maine being that top state in our region

Each program begins with a three-day summer immersion experience. The first will be at Mayo Regional Hospital’s Resource Center in Dover-Foxcroft on June 25, 26, and 27. The second group will meet at C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville, on July 16, 17, and 18. Both groups will meet from 10:00 to 2:00 each day.

This summer’s area of exploration will be the cardiovascular system.  Students will meet the experts in the areas of heart-healthy nutrition, what to do in a cardiac emergency and cardiovascular anatomy.  The hands-on activities will be fun as well as educational.

Following the initial event, the groups will meet monthly to continue learning about other health career topics that they choose, do service-learning projects, and participate in field trips.  They will be eligible to participate in all 4-H activities at the local, state, and national levels.

Space is limited. Applications will be accepted on a first come-first served basis.

Agway with University of Maine Extension staff learned about the importance of
phosphorus in people and plants, how plants get their phosphorous, and what
happens when too much phosphate fertilizer is used.

Those attending learned how to test their soil, use phosphorus fertilizer, and how
to manage or improve their garden soils. A special section on Rain Gardens and
riparian buffers rounded out the program.
