“Is there a GRE “cutoff?” No, but a low GRE score (lower than 1250 with a 5.0 on the analytical writing section) will have to be compensated for by excellent grades and writing sample and letters. Timeline and cost:

 

Sept.: Research and select 8-10 programs

Oct.: Take the GRE, ask for letters of recommendation, select writing sample (and a professor to help you polish it), refine list of programs

Nov.: Retake GRE, work on writing sample, request official transcripts, draft personal statement

Dec.:  Finish personal statement and writing sample, apply to schools with mid-Dec and early Jan deadlines

 

Cost: GRE $150, each application: $30-100
