University Percussion Ensemble Fall Concert

Required equipment: An adequate array of sticks and mallets used for the interpretation of standard percussion repertoire. See Equipment Needs for First Year Percussion Students at the University of Maine for details. A no.2 PENCIL and eraser are required for every rehearsal. NEVER USE PEN.
Recommended equipment: The serious percussionist will acquire many of the small “accessories,” and more specialized mallets as his/her studies progress. Examples include: tambourines, blocks, cowbells, cymbals; bass drum beaters, gong beaters, triangle beaters, etc.
Goals of the course: We will rehearse and perform works from the standard percussion ensemble repertoire. During the rehearsal process, we will learn about general ensemble concerns that can receive more exacting attention in percussion ensemble than in larger symphonic ensembles, e.g., phrasing, ensemble, and balance. More idiosyncratic concerns will also be covered, e.g., logistics of set-up, mallet selection, instrument selection, playing technique, etc.
Preparation: Other than first readings, it is expected that individual parts will be practiced and prepared by the first full rehearsal of the respective work. Rehearsal time will be used for interpretation, balance, ensemble issues, etc. This is the most IMPORTANT commitment to our ensemble – a rehearsal is NOT and nore should it ever be – considered “practice.” Rehearsal means RE-HEARs-ALL. It is a time for you to hear how all parts fit together as an ensemble, so everyone must be at every rehearsal and fully prepared. (I trust that you get the point.)
The Percussion Studio MUST be kept clean, neat, and tidy at all times.
All set-ups must be prepared prior to the beginning of rehearsal, and must be broken down and put away immediately following rehearsal.
You are responsible for your own set-up and strike, however, once you are finished with your own, please ask if you can be of help to someone with a more complicated set-up.
Any instruments moved back and forth from room 100 and the percussion studio for percussion ensemble rehearsals should be returned to home base and properly stored immediately following rehearsal. Please help out with large or heavy instruments. (This holds true for any rehearsal or concert.)
Attendance: Obligatory (See the above “Preparation” comment.)
Evaluation: The grade will be based on attendance, attitude, preparation, participation in instrument moves, etc. Level of technical development will not be a factor in the grade.
Concerts: Instrument moves will be coordinated in such a way that the entire group will participate both before and after a performance or rehearsal.
Rehearsal Schedules will be posted to the FirstClass Percussion Studio Conference in advance. Please refer to these, and carefully note when pieces you play are scheduled. It would be good to get the instruments you need at the start of rehearsal rather than once rehearsal has begun. If the schedule does not include pieces you are assigned, you do not need to attend.
