Nanofiber R & D

The University of Maine is pleased to support the research community as it advances the science and commercial development of biobased nanomaterials. Our new Nanofiber Pilot Plant, constructed through a joint venture agreement with the USDA Forest Service, is an advanced facility capable of producing one ton of nanofiber per day. UMaine offers open access to the facility on a fee-for-service basis for research and for the manufacture of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) for prototype commercial development. This cutting-edge technology has great potential to improve the quality of products such as automobile components, super-strong materials, food additives, composites and paper. It is useful in a wide variety of applications due to its light-weight and durable nature.

The UMaine Process Development Center serves as the primary distributor of CNF and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) in a number of forms to fit the specific needs of your project. We are currently distributing CNF (manufactured at UMaine) and CNC – in slurry and dry form (manufactured at the Forest Products Laboratory in Wisconsin). To purchase samples, please visit our Nanocellulose Requests page and Cellulose Nanocrystals page. To learn more about our Nanofiber Pilot Plant, please visit our Nanocellulose FacilityMedia and Nanocellulose Resources pages.
