Boardwalk Update – 3 March 2015

On Saturday, March 14th we will have a Boardwalk potluck social at the Birch Street School Senior Center behind the Orono Public Library.  Please bring a main dish, dessert, bread, or salad.  We will have a full update on Boardwalk activities as we get ready for our 13th season.  We hope you all can come to this social, festivities start at 6:30 p.m.  If you know someone who is interested in volunteering for the Boardwalk please bring them along.

The Hope Festival is Saturday, April 25th, 11am-3pm at the Rec Center, UM.  Please email Jim Bird if you’d like to help out by staffing our information table.

The Boardwalk campaign group will be meeting next week.  The main purpose of the meeting is to map out our campaign to raise funds to finish reconstruction of the Boardwalk.  As of today we need to raise $46,000 to get to the half way point in reconstructing the Boardwalk.

The next 48 boardwalk sections from Great Northern Docks (designed and built by UMaine alumni Steve Merriam) will be arriving at the end of March/early April.  We have about 40 old sections to take out and then we start putting in 96 new sections.  We learned much about installing new sections last year so installing these sections should not take as long as last year.  We will be sending out a call for volunteers sometime in the first part of April to help (weather dependent).

The Boardwalk has joined the Bangor Chamber of Commerce.  We did this so that we can start meeting Bangor area business owners/leaders that would be willing to help us in our fundraising efforts.  Tracy Willette is the main contact but all management committee members are on the Chamber mailing list.

We are looking into developing a safety plan for the Boardwalk.

We have updated the Boardwalk case statement for our fundraising efforts.  Jim Bird will bring copies to the potluck social on 3/14.

We have new t-shirts with the campaign logo (the banner we use at the cabin) designed by former Orono Land Trust volunteer Katy Hackelroad.  They look really good.  We’ll have the first batch available for purchase at the potluck social on 3/14.

We will have a yard sale this year but in July, not June.  More later.

Since Jim Bird retired at the end of December (congrats Jim) he’s been hard at work organizing the Boardwalk files, which he hopes to complete in the next couple months.

We hope to see you all on March 14th at 6:30pm at the Birch Street School Senior Center in Orono.
