Onward Courses, Labs and Degree Credit - Degree Credit

How many University degree credits can students earn in their first year in Onward? It depends on a number of factors. The chart below explains:

Course Fall Spring
Composition ONE 12 Composition
Students who earn an A in ONE 12 and receive a positive review of their portfolios can earn 3 degree “transfer credits” for ENG 101 (no grade for ENG 101).
ENG 101 (Onward)
Students who successfully complete Onward ENG 101 in the spring will earn 3 degree credits. Students who submitted portfolios in the fall and earned the 3 transfer credits for ENG101 will not have to take it in the spring. They may choose to take up to 3 credits of University courses outside Onward in English or Humanities.
Reading ONR 12 Introduction to Academic Reading
Students can take CLEP Exam to earn 3 degree credits for HTY 103. See CLEP Exam page for more information.
ENG 131 Nature of Story
Explores the fundamental activity of why and how we create, tell and read/listen to stories.¬† Readings may include selections from folk tale and myth, saga and epic, drama and novel, film and song, poetry and essay–from the ancient world to the modern, from the western cultural tradition and from a variety of other cultures. 3 degree credits.
Biology & Zoology ONS 11 Biology
Students can earn 4 degree “credits by examination” by successfully completing the BIO 100 final exam at end of the Onward course.
ONS 14 Zoology
Students can earn 4 degree “credits by examination” for successful completion of ONS 11 Biology and ONS 14 Zoology (C or higher) and successful completion of the final exam for BIO 222.
Chemistry ONS 12 Chemistry
Students can waive ONS 12 Chemistry by passing the Chemistry Final in the fall. Those who can waive ONS 12 can take 3-4 credits of University science courses outside Onward with advisor approval.
Mathematics MAT 111 (Onward)
Students earn 3 degree credits for successful completion of this course.

Orientation ONO 100 Orientation I
Students earn 1 degree credit for successful completion of this course.
