Our Accomplishments

Becoming a Voting Member of CANS

In Fall 2011, we began collaborating with UMaine’s Off-Campus Board (OCB), the student group that represents commuter, non-traditional and veteran students to Student Government, to find a way to give non-traditional students a mechanism to propose policy and to have a voice within the board itself.  In Spring 2012, that collaboration resulted in OCB turning into the Commuter And Non-traditional Students (CANS) representative board where NSA has full voting privileges and a seat at every board meeting.  This achievement will allow NSA to propose relevant policy to Student Government while also receiving board support for its activities and resources.

Business Meetings

In Spring 2007, we began holding business meetings while we awaited recognition as a student club, which finally happened in Spring 2008. We’ve since held business meetings most weeks when classes are in session.

Orientation for Non-Traditional Students

In Fall 2006, we discussed orientation with the staff associate for Non-Traditional Student Programs and the next year, they implemented a special alternative orientation for non-traditional students.

Family Movie & Pizza Nights

In Spring 2008, we began providing the refreshments for a night out for parents on campus. Since fall 2008, we have been able to provide two of these nights each semester for students with children.

Brown Bag Lunch

In 2007, we began reserving a room in the Memorial Union for several hours one day each week for the use of non-traditional students during lunch break.

Recognition of Non-Traditional Students

In Fall 2007, we began placing a half-page ad in the Maine Campus to recognize non-traditional student graduates. We acquired keepsakes to give out to non-traditional graduates during the small celebration held in the Commuter Lounge that semester, an idea which led to Dean Dana handing out a special engraved keepsake during a graduation breakfast for non-traditional students first held in May 2008.

Non-Traditional Students Week

In fall 2008, we provided the lunch for the live ‘n’ learn series of lectures organized during this week.

FirstClass Folder

In Spring 2007, we received our own folder on FirstClass.

Website

In Spring 2007, we received our own website and were listed in the A-Z directory at the University of Maine site.

Improved Club Forms

Due to our attention to liability items on the club creation and update forms, they were changed in Fall 2008 to contain clearer language regarding liability issues for clubs and their officers.
